How TIM Fiber works up to 10 Giga
TIM Fiber can reach 10 Giga download speeds thanks to the use of XGS-PON technology, an evolution of GPON technology used in the “classic” Fiber to the Home lines up to 2.5 Giga.
Going into more detail, the acronym GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network and indicates the fact that the fiber distribution network is passive and is made up of elements (cables, joints, splitters, etc.) that do not need to be powered by energy electricity to work. Electricity, on the other hand, is used by devices installed at the ends of the network – that is, in power plants and in the homes of end users -, where, to allow use of the connection, light is converted into electrical signals and vice versa.
The optical fiber network has a point-to-multipoint architecture in which a terminal called OLT ( Optical Line Terminal ), typically located in the exchange, sends the light to one or more optical splitters (often located in street cabinets) which receive it and they divide the power towards the ONT ( Optical Network Terminal ), i.e. the final devices installed in the customers’ homes. Each OLT is able to connect up to 128 users to each fiber optic cable, even if, in practice, 16/64 are never exceeded (to avoid reducing too much the performance of the connections in the users’ homes).
If in classic networks based on GPON this architecture allows for connections up to 2.5 Gigabit, in TIM networks based on XGS-PON (which stands for 10 Gigabit capable Symmetric Passive Optical Network ) a new splitter technology is used which allows connect up to 32 customers to each fiber (technically you go from a maximum splitting factor of 1:128 to one of 1:256) with a maximum connection of 10 Gbps symmetrical download . In addition, the range increases from 60 to 100 km. A really nice leap , there’s no denying it!
It should be emphasized that TIM’s 10 Giga connection is currently available in over 30 municipalities , exclusively in areas covered by XGS-PON exchanges (you can, however, check coverage directly from the TIM website before activating the offer), and that the real Browsing speed depends on the technical and performance characteristics of the devices in use : if, for example, you want to connect to the Internet via an Ethernet cable and your PC is not equipped with a native 10 Gbps port, you will need to use a 10 Gbps adapter (not supplied from TIM).
