What’s new in Outlast II

Although the playable core of this sequel is very similar to that of the first Outlast , there are a number of quite important new features that must be taken into account when playing.

  1. Bandages:now health does not regenerate automatically, and we must collect bandages in the scenarios to heal. We can only wear a maximum of three bandages, and when we are injured it will be enough to press the Triangle / Y button to heal. Keep in mind that this process is done standing up and takes a few seconds, so do not start to heal in the middle of a chase, and only do it when you are safe.
  2. The microphone:the camcorder in this sequel in addition to seeing in the dark has a new function: the microphone. This is activated by pressing on the left crosshead of the controller, and allows us to amplify the sounds, so we can hear the movement of the enemies from several meters away. When activated, a meter appears on the left side of the screen, and depending on its height, it tells us how close we are to the sound source. This can be very useful when we are hiding in the cornfields, to know where the enemies are moving.
  3. Swimming and diving:now we can be born and dive, and if we press the duck button when we are in the water, we can dive, and thus the enemies will not see us. The character holds his breath quite a bit while diving, so use this to be inconspicuous in areas with water.
  4. New places to hide: inaddition to lockers, cupboards or under doors, we can now hide in new places, such as barrels. These may or may not have water, and it is important, since if we get into one with water we can only spend a limited time inside, holding our breath. We can also hide in the grass, just crouching down.
  5. Leaning over the ledges:now when we are clinging to a ledge, before going up, we can lean out and look, pressing both triggers on the remote. This action is also used when we are inside a barrel and looking outside, but it must be used with care, since when we are leaning the enemies can see us perfectly.
  6. Crawling:A new movement is crawling or crawling, which is done by holding down the crouch button. We advise you to move through the stages in this way, since we move very slowly, but it can be used to get into very narrow places, which would not be possible when crouching.

Advice

Outlast II is quite a difficult game, so we are going to give you a series of tips so that you can face the adventure with guarantees.

  1. Before entering a house, try to observe through the windows if there is an enemy inside, since if not you can take some unpleasant surprise. Remember that there are several ways to enter a building, not only through the door, such as windows or even small ducts at the basement level.
  2. Try to collect all the sales and stacksthat you see exploring the scenarios, you never know when you will need them. Although you can only carry a maximum of three bandages, the battery limit is much higher, and it is the most valuable resource in the game.
  3. Use the new camera microphonefunction (by pressing on the left of the crosshair), something that is especially useful when you are hiding in the grass and cornfields. It is an easy way to know where enemies are moving.
  4. If the enemies are chasing you and you get into a house or room, close the doorand see if it has a lock on the top, which you can release by pressing the interact button. This will prevent enemies from entering for a few seconds (they will eventually knock the door down), giving you valuable time to hide under a bed or in a closet.
  5. Attentive to the music, if it is getting very intense perhaps it is telling you to run, since you are in the middle of a chase. There are situations in the game that cannot be overcome by hiding and waiting, and you have to run without stopping.
  6. Not all the characters you see are hostile, some don’t attack you when you see you, and it’s something you’ll have to find out by experimenting. If they have seen you and are not running towards you, they are sure not hostile.
  7. With the L1 / LB button you can look back, something that can be used to know how far your pursuers are from you, or if you are moving an object such as a car, you will not get a pleasant surprise. In any case, if in a chase you are clear about your path, it is better not to look back and run as long as you can …
  8. If you are stuck in a situation where you are being killed repeatedly, try other alternatives, such as using a more stealthy approach, or the opposite, running like crazy, something that is sometimes valid to leave multiple enemies behind .
  9. The character gets fatigued if you’ve been running for a long time, but he has a lot of stamina, so don’t try too hard to manage energy, run as fast as you can when you’re being chased.
  10. It is complicated, but try not to constantly use night vision, since if you run out of power or batteries you may need it in a very specific situation, in which it is impossible to see. When there is some light and visibility, turn off the night vision and save it for a more necessary occasion.
  11. In areas with water, the character lasts a long time diving, so use it to advance great distances so that they can see you. If you hide in a barrel of water, pray that the enemy on duty leaves before the oxygen is depleted.
  12. To open the doors gently and quietly, press and hold the action button and move the stick slowly forward or backward. If you give a simple touch to the button, you will open it with a bang, and the noise can alert an enemy.
  13. To get to some areas of the stages and hold on, you will have to run and jump at the last moment. It is not a very demanding game when it comes to jumps, but it does require that you sometimes run to the edges to do a longer jump.
  14. If when you are running you press the duck button, the character will slide on the ground, something that can come in handy in a chase in which you have to get into a narrow place. Be careful because if you leave it pressed, what you will do is lie down on the ground and crawl.

Collectibles

In Outlast II there are two types of collectibles : text documents , and video recordings . Documents are easy to see on stage, as they shine, and just pick them up to keep them safe.

The recordings are certain places in the scenarios or situations to which we have to be focusing with the camera, and we will see a circular meter that is filling up, while the REC indicator appears on the screen. These recordings can sometimes be specific places on the stage where we have all the time in the world to record, but at other times they can be enemies doing some action, and we will only have one chance, for a few seconds, to capture the moment.

If you are a completist you have to be careful, since these moments can be lost , unless you load the game or repeat that situation again in the selection of chapters, something that allows the game quite comfortably. So keep the camera out of its holster for as long as possible, so you don’t miss any video footage.

In total there are 105 collectibles , which you can see in the video below:
