We have compiled a list of things that will be useful for practicing winter sports.
1. Thermal underwear
Despite the prefix “thermo”, the main task of such underwear is to remove moisture from the body, and not to warm it. A regular cotton T-shirt will not cope with this: it takes a long time to dry. Therefore, for intense loads, it is better to choose a product made of synthetic material that actively absorbs moisture. Thermal underwear is often made of two-layer fabric: the inner layer fits snugly to the body and removes moisture, the outer layer ensures its rapid evaporation and warms up. Although the thermal underwear should be close to the skin, make sure that it does not hinder movement. Also pay attention to the seams: they must be “flat”, otherwise they will chafe the skin.
2. Ski suit
When choosing a suit, pay attention to water resistance and vapor permeability. These figures should not be lower than 5000, even if you are a beginner skier and choose a simple model. Wearing the right clothing will keep you dry from the snow. Down, synthetic winterizer, fleece or thinsulate can serve as insulation in a suit. If you are planning to actively ride, choose fleece or thinsulate – they do not get lost after washing. The color of the suit should be bright – this way you will be better seen on the slope.
3. Waterproof gloves
These gloves will keep warm and keep moisture out thanks to a special membrane fabric. Riding comfort will be ensured. And if you choose a product with sensor inserts, you can easily use your smartphone while relaxing. It is advisable to try on gloves before buying. They should not be too narrow and hinder movement. Too free will also not work. If you plan on snowboarding, you can look for gloves with built-in wrist protectors to cushion the impact of a fall.

4. Ski mask
If you are planning to go to the mountains, do not forget your ski mask. It will protect your eyes from ultraviolet radiation, as well as snow and ice chips. There are models designed for riding in bright, sunny weather, and there are – in foggy weather. They differ in lenses. Look for VLT (Visible Light Transmittance) markings. It is indicated as a percentage: the lower the indicator, the less sunlight will pass through the mask. For example, lenses with a VLT of 3 to 18% are designed for skating in very bright sun. Ideally, it is better to stock up on two masks: for fine and rainy days.
5. Buff
A buff is a multifunctional headgear that can be used as a hat, scarf or comforter. It can be easily fixed above the nose to protect your face from cold and wind, and can also be used as a headband or hair tie. In general, the area of use is limited only by the owner’s imagination. There are different buffs: summer made of thin fabric and winter with insulation. The product should stretch well and be long enough – about 50 cm.
6. Helmet
When skiing or snowboarding, do not forget a safety helmet. Both beginners and experienced athletes need it. A quality helmet consists of three layers: a hard outer shell, a thick and soft inner shell, and a fabric lining. He should sit tightly on his head, not press or dangle. In addition, helmets differ in the type of ear protection. “Hard” ones provide better protection when falling. This helmet is warmer, but you can hear it worse. The product is more suitable for those who like an aggressive riding style. In a helmet of the “soft” category, hearing is better, but the ears are less protected. This one can be worn by those who do not develop high speeds.
7. Protective equipment
In addition to the helmet, additional protection for the elbows, knees, back and tailbone will not hurt. This will help cushion the impact of a fall and prevent injury. When choosing protective gear, consider the sport you plan to play and your level of riding. For example, for downhill skiing, shorts with reinforced hip protection are more suitable. And if you plan to master snowboarding, it is better to choose a model with an accentuated protection of the tailbone and buttocks.
8. Fleece suit
It can be used as a second layer between thermal underwear and ski suits. Fleece keeps the cold out and wicks away moisture. It is also lightweight, so it is convenient to move in it. Fleece clothing does not take up much space in the suitcase and dries quickly after washing. When choosing a suit, consider the density of the fleece – it can be from 100 to 600 g / m2. Thin material with a density of 100 g / m2 is suitable for spring and summer. For winter, you need a thicker fleece. If you plan to wear the suit in a second layer, then it is better to choose things with a semi-fitted silhouette, and not too loose.
9. Balaclava
A headgear that can be worn under a helmet. It will protect you from cold, wind and will play the role of thermal underwear, removing excess moisture from your face. You can choose an accessory from Polartec – it resembles fleece, but better protects against strong winds. The balaclava should fit snugly to the head so that there are no gaps between it and the skin. The accessory should not interfere with breathing (you can look for a model with perforated inserts) and limit visibility.
10. Thermos
An important thing that will help you keep warm and rejuvenate. For hiking and skiing in the mountains, it is better to choose a small tourist thermos made of stainless material. Plastic and glass flasks also keep warm well, but are more suitable for walking in the city. Typically, a quality thermos will keep the beverage warm for about eight hours. Before buying, smell the container: there should be no foreign odors.
11. Shoe dryer
Drying your shoes by the battery is not an option. Better to get a compact electric dryer that will help out both at home and on the road. The boots will dry in 6-8 hours. And due to the fact that the plates of the dryer will evenly heat up, the favorite pair will definitely not be deformed. The device can work from the mains or batteries.
12. Waterproof backpack
A durable and lightweight backpack will become an indispensable companion for winter hiking enthusiasts. It should be compact enough, but roomy, with many pockets. Winter backpacks are made of fabric that can withstand low temperatures. They can be equipped with additional ski, snowboard and helmet mountings, as well as a compartment for avalanche equipment – shovel and probe. Choose a backpack with a hard back and wide padded shoulder straps and a belt. Thanks to this design, it will be easier to distribute the load.
