THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SUN FOR LIVING BEINGS

The Sun is a star , and we, who are on Earth , are the third planet that we rotate around it. It provides us with heat and is a great source of light energy , being fundamental for the survival of many living beings.

How important is the sun for vegetables?

Vegetables, for example, can only perform photosynthesis with the presence of light, as they have a specific pigment, chlorophyll, which is able to capture sunlight so that it is transformed into energy. They also produce oxygen, which is used by a large number of living beings on Earth, including us humans.

Sunlight is very important for vegetables.

The intensity of sunlight can vary according to the season . In winter and autumn, for example, the days are shorter, so we have less incidence of sunlight. In spring and summer, the days are longer, so we have a greater amount of sunlight. These differences in solar incidence are perceived in the different seasons of the year due to the translation movement , that is, when the Earth makes a complete turn around the Sun. This movement lasts 365 days and 6 hours, that is, 1 year.

The different solar intensities affect the life of the plants.

Thus, in the difference in solar incidence, we realize that plants produce flowers and fruits at different times. The spring , for example, is the period of highest production of flowers, and autumn is the period when the leaves fall from the trees more and produce more fruit.

How important is the sun for animals?

When we also observe the solar incidence in the animal world, we see that, in winter, we have colder days and nights. At that time many animals go to hibernation , which is a long period of dormancy, so they save energy and do not need to go and get food. But the summer is a warmer period and more sunlight, and animals tend to leave in search of food and a couple to the mating and having babies .

Hibernation helps the animal through the winter.

We human beings also use light energy directly, as we need it to strengthen our bones. When we are exposed to the Sun (but it is important that it is done at the appropriate time), our body activates vitamin D, which helps in strengthening our bone system.
