Origen
A French farmer and a priest developed the first Rex rabbit. They called him “Castorex”. In 1924, these unique rabbits made their debut at the International Rabbit Show in Paris, at which time they were brought to the United States . The new breed had long ears, a flat back, and a very long body. The Rex caused a sensation with its fur.
Features
Rex rabbits have the characteristic of having a particular type of hair that is short and extremely silky to the touch. There are more than 50 varieties and colors for the Rex breed , although the Rex can be divided into 4 types, Smooth Coat (soft coat), Astrex, Minirex and Opossum Rex (Rex opossum). The Smooth Coat is considered the standard Rex. The Astrex is very rare and is characterized by its wavy coat. The Minirex is what its name implies, a smaller version of the Rex weighing around 1.5kgs. The Opossum Rex is another rare silver-coated variety. The Rex (except the Minirex) weighs around 3.5 kgs, has erect ears and well developed muscles.
Feeding
The rex rabbit feeds mainly on forage, grasses, fruits, seeds and bark. In the week they can only be given 20kg of concentrate.
