Puyo Puyo Tetris Review

Two classic puzzle games like Tetris and Puyo Puyo merge into an absorbing video game with the best of each. Analysis of Puyo Puyo Tetris, the new Sega production for Nintendo Switch and PS4 that keeps inside a large number of game modes and puzzle challenges.

Honestly when it comes to puzzle games, there have been many titles that I have been able to enjoy throughout my life. And of course, both Puyo Puyo and Tetris have made me enjoy countless times… especially this latest saga. There are countless times that I played the incredibly addictive edition of Tetris from the Game Boy as well as the unforgettable Super Tetris 2 + Bomblis from Super Famicom, a game that I never understood why it did not officially reach our territory.

Both one and the other land together on Nintendo Switch and PS4 thanks to Puyo Puyo Tetris . A work by Sega that, although it will probably not make many headlines in the specialized press, I can assure you that it is a very complete and very fun game that also offers incalculable hours of fun. I’ve been playing for a week and whenever I’ve had a gap, I’ve taken advantage of it to enjoy some of the many game options offered by this production.

Precisely if Puyo Puyo Tetris stands out for something, it is for hosting a very large number of well-defined modalities and that, by the way, can accommodate a maximum of four players both online and locally. This last characteristic is the one that ends up shaping a really round and complete game within its genre, a title with which it is very difficult to get bored or tired of it.

Puyo Puyo Tetris: Trailer

It is a very complete and very fun game that also offers incalculable hours of funWhat is the basic formula of one and the other? Well, in case there is someone who has lived on Mars during the last decades, you should know that while in Tetris we must properly place the tiles (called Tetriminos among other terms) that fall from the top of the screen to form horizontal lines of blocks that they are disappearing. And what about Puyo Puyo? Well, in this case, instead of blocks, what we must gather are bubbles of different tones that disappear when we join four or more of the same tone.

Simple, absorbing and addictive game mechanics that have been with us for many years. If they have not gone out of style in all this time, it will be for something …

Puzzles for all tastesSo early and early, the game gives us such an enormous amount of game modes and options that it can even overwhelm us at first. Sega has spared nothing in this regard and has wanted to provide his work with a lot of content both to enjoy the game individually and also with others, a fact that we appreciate from here.

If we decide to play alone, we can do so both by one of the main modes that the game presents, Adventure , and by one of the many that are included in the Solo Arcade option that I will talk about later. Focusing on the first one, the Adventure mode consists of several different acts that include no less than ten different tests each one of them, which guarantees many hours of fun. And more if we take into account that although it is not a hellish game mode at all in terms of its level of difficulty, it is true that from time to time we have to overcome some or other rather difficult test.

One of the game modes, Fusion, combines the Puyo Puyo formula with the Tetris formula in the same game. Total madness.

This game mode has a “very Japanese” script and a very large number of characters appear on the screen that do not stop talking with each other, talks that are recreated in English with subtitles only in that same language, one of the few drawbacks that the title holds. Space travel, dimensional jumps and other clichés enter the fray throughout the story starring Tee, Ringo and other characters, a curious plot where they exist and that serves as an excuse to offer us what we have told you: a great variety of tests .

One-on-one confrontations, time-trial challenges, levels in which we must alternate mechanics based on Tetris with others in Puyo Puyo and other challenges alternate as the phases go by. Without being the best game mode I have ever enjoyed in a puzzle title, it is entertaining and quite durable within the limits.

It is possible to unlock about 24 different characters, all of them very nice and genuinely manganime in appearance.

Much more crumb presents the section that I mentioned before, Solo Arcade, a modality that brings together no less than half a dozen different submodalities. Versus is the most traditional, but we can choose to enjoy the Tetris or Puyo Puyo formula, whichever we like the most. Then we have Fusion , one of the most attractive because it combines, on the same screen, both game formulas, which is a challenge in itself. Swap is similar to the previous one but instead of Tetriminos and Puyos falling on the same screen, in this case we must play in two different ones that alternate. Big Bang is like small preset puzzles in which we must placeR strategically the falling tiles to eliminate the rest of the blocks or Puyos that are arranged on the screen. And finally, in Party items are added that we can use to our benefit while in Challenge we are encouraged to participate in half a dozen more challenges (Marathon, Ultra, Sprint, etc.) that put our ability to the test.

Do you think there are few game options to entertain ourselves alone? Well, you should know that each of them also presents different options and alternatives, giving rise to hours and hours of varied fun.

The same, but replicated and adapted, is what the title offers us if we decide to play multiplayer. The Multiplayer Arcade allows two, three or up to four players to enjoy local matches to Versus, Fusion, Swap, Big Bang and Party disciplines. And in the Switch version, we can do it both in ad-hoc mode (each with their console) or on the same television.

These same modalities are integrated into one of the online modes that the title also presents, Free Play , a discipline that also allows us to participate in an interesting Puzzle Legue (with rankings in between), invite a friend or even view repetitions .

A feast of options and game modes that has been well “packaged” by a clearly manganime aesthetic packaging, very striking and colorful, although this aspect is totally secondary in this type of game. And the same goes for the sound, which more than meets without reaching outstanding levels.

“Very good”

Puzzle game lovers can now enjoy a careful title, full of game modes and capable of offering fun whether it is played alone or in the company of four other users. Sega has managed to recreate with Puyo Puyo Tetris one of the best titles of its kind in recent months, a work that can spare you months and months of entertainment.

  • Endless different game modes
  • The multiplayer mode for four is tremendous
  • Very nice and colorful staging
  • Engaging and customizable gaming experience
  • The plot of Adventure mode is… surreal
