Macagua (Los Arabos)

Macagua. It belongs to the municipality of Los Arabos province of Matanzas , Cuba. It is located in the easternmost part of the province. Its total area is 760.1 km 2 , occupying the sixth place and 6.4% of the provincial territory. There are 34 population settlements, of which 4 are classified as urban and the remaining 30 as rural. The resident population is 24,940, with a density of 32.7 inhabitants per km 2 .

History

The name of the town of Macagua is due to the number of trees named Macaguas that existed in the place: that is, the wild trees of the Island of Cuba, whose fibrous and hard wood that was used in carpentry at that time.

Foundation

It was founded on 2 of November of 1868 in favor of José Fuente Flores who lived in that area and then exchanged in 1892 for Pedro Rocío Oquendo, who from 1914 dismounts and begins its agricultural and ranching.

Relief

The territory that the Popular Council occupies is flat with small elevations ranging from 40 meters to 60 meters located mainly in its area. The predominant images are the sparse mountains and some large palm groves that still remain, although the large extensions of forest species in the Santa Lucía and Cayo Mamones area present pleasant visuals, not being the case in the areas surrounding the ” Mario Muñoz ” Sugar Company. .

Weather

The prevailing winds are from the Northwest quadrant and East Franco with a greater annual frequency from the Northeast directions. The annual average temperature is 24 0 C, reaching the average minimum temperatures of 13 0 C and 34 0 C respectively.

Rainfall ranges from 1400–1500 mm, with notable differences between the dry period (November – April) in which 200–250 mm are recorded and the wet period (May – October), which reaches 1200–1300 mm.

The territory is located in a karst plain and to a lesser degree denudative karst, on limestone rocks, and clayey limestones, its soils are ferralitic brown with 63,209 ha, (96% of the total) and deep red hydromorphic with 2,821 ha, (4% of the total).

Hydrography

The hydrogeological basement of Macagua sits in the basin sections M-III-7, MV-1, M-VI-1, M-VI-2 with 67% of the territory on non-aquiferous rocks and due to its scarce relief, make it difficult to build reservoirs. The watery surface occupies an area of ​​1744 ha: of them 161 ha in channels, this surface representing 2% of the municipal total.

Flora

In this Popular Council existed forests of precious woods such as mahogany , Majagua , Cedro , [Ácana]], Ocuje , very abundant until today the Pino . It is common to find the Flowering Tree, the Framboyán , the Cardones, Güiras, to a lesser extent the Alamos, some Ceibas, and we greatly appreciate the majestic Royal Palm . From fruit trees we have some important ones such as guava, mango, and others. Pineapples and bananas are grown in different areas . Other crops stand out such as: sweet potato, cassava, corn, tomato, etc.
