Etymology

The word celestial derives from the Latin caelestis, ‘celestial’, and this from caelum, ‘firmament, sky , abode of the gods, climate , of uncertain origin, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European * kaid — slo—, from a root meaning ‘sparkly’.

Definition

Although cerulean is synonymous with celestial, it does not have exactly the same meanings. Cerulean is the name of a blue pigment traditionally used in artistic painting , and by extension the color of that pigment and that of the paint made with it.

Linguistic peculiarities

Not all languages have a term for light blue, and not all consider light blue as part of blue . In Spanish we tend to call “celeste” a light blue , and “azul” a medium or dark blue , but:

  • In Russian , light blue (голубой, golubóy) is considered as a color other than blue (синий, siníy). This case represents a total semantic separation between blue and light blue, since neither of the two color denominations includes the other: golubóy covers light blues, and siníy dark ones.
  • In Italian , light blues fall under the name of azzurro, a category different from dark blue (blu). However, in Italian there is also the adjectival celestial chromatic, which denotes a set of colors that in Spanish would be described as very light celestial, of weak saturation.
  • In language English , by contrast, the term blue ( ” blue “) covers all blueish colorations, including the celestial, which is described as a type of blue (sky blue, light blue, baby blue, etc.).

History

Celeste was a Punic goddess whom the Greeks called Urania, characterized by being bright, luminous, clear and resplendent.

It also became popular thanks to the eldest daughter of Galileo Galilei and Marina Gamba , María Celeste, whose name is due to the devotion they had for the Virgin Mary and her father’s love for astronomy . On his thirteenth birthday he entered the San Mateo convent , where he died at the age of thirty-four after falling ill with dysentery .

Personality

Women with these names are characterized by being demanding, disciplined, delicate, sincere, honest, cheerful, understanding with their close ones, sociable, creative and have a very good humor. In love, they look for serious partners who provide them with stability.

They tend to excel in professions in which it is necessary to possess deductive gifts, such as, for example, scientist, teacher, occultist, writer, horticulturist, inventor, lawyer, actor, analyst or religious leader.

Symbolism and uses

Heraldry

The celestial is an enamel little used in traditional European heraldry , a variant of azure. As a field of heraldry it is sometimes called “Campo de Cielo ” (Italian, Campo di Cielo). One of the prominent and traditional examples of the use of light blue enamel in European heraldry can be seen on the arms of the German state of Bavaria . The blue and silver fused field that identifies it appears as part of many shields of the region, and also on its flag . However, although in this case the colorit is always represented as celestial, it is emblazoned as azure. In Spain the celestial can be seen in the arms of some municipalities, where it is emblazoned as « azure blue». In post-independence Latin American heraldry the opposite occurs than in European heraldry : the celestial is relatively frequent in national shields. Thus, we find this enamel on the national coats of arms of Guatemala , Argentina , Peru , Brazil , Ecuador , Nicaragua and Honduras., appearing many more examples of its use when descending to the regional, provincial, municipal levels, etc.

Vexillology

The light blue color is widely used in world vexillology. It appears, for example, on the national flags of Argentina , Guatemala , El Salvador , Honduras , San Marino and Luxembourg . In other territorial flags, at the regional level it is incorporated by the flags of Galicia , Bavaria and Guayaquil , while at the municipal level it is found in the flag of Santa Marta , for example.

Examples

On the flag of San Marino , the blue stripe symbolizes freedom; the flag of Somalia is light blue in recognition of the United Nations ; The old flag of the United Provinces of Central America takes its colors from the flag of the old United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and gives rise to several flags of Central American nations ( Guatemala , El Salvador , Honduras , Nicaragua), where the two celestial stripes usually represent some virtues (justice, loyalty, strength, etc.) and the two oceans that flank Central America .

Religion

By tradition , the vestments (representations of clothing) of the Virgin Mary are usually light blue and white. The traditions of the Mongolian, Kyrgyz and Altaic steppe cultures relate the celestial color to their creator gods, by association with the blue wolf that, in myth, descended from Heaven and gave rise to these peoples. Although it might be thought that the celestial – and therefore positive – symbolism of the color celestial is universal, this is not always the case. In the 1950s , the Pepsi company lost part of its Southeast Asian market to its competitor Coca-Cola when it switched bluefrank of its logo to light blue, since this color is associated with death and mourning in that region.

Gender identity

In the West , light blue is seen as a color denoting masculinity, just as pink is feminine. However, this identification between color and gender is relatively recent. It has been observed that, for example, in England at the end of the Victorian period clothing for boys could be colored pink or magenta , while the fashionable American in the early decades of the twentieth century occasionally recommended dressing children in pink and the girls of celeste. Some authors point out that before the color pink was universally identified with femininity, in the West , girls tended to dress in light blue because that was the traditional color of the Virgin Mary’s clothing . When the current preference of pink for girls and light blue for boys was established, attention has been drawn to a paragraph from the novel Little Women, by LM Alcott ( 1868 ), where one of the characters proposes to distinguish two baby twins from different sex «French style», putting a light blue bow on the child and a pink oneto the girl. This suggests that, by then, this custom already existed in France , although in the United States it only crystallized in the 1940s . Eva Heller , in her book Psychology of Color – written from a German cultural perspective – locates the birth of this custom around 1920 , and its global generalization around the 1970s . The light blue color usually appears, denoting masculinity, in some of the symbols with which the LGBT community identifies.

Sportswear

Light blue is the distinctive color of the sports uniforms of the soccer teams of Uruguay and Argentina , and of the football clubs O’Higgins FC , Club Atlético Belgrano , Real Club Celta de Vigo , Deportes Iquique , Racing Club , Club Atlético Temperley , Sporting Cristal , Atlético Ciclón de Tarija , Club Blooming , Lazio , Manchester City , Napoli , Atlético Tucumán , Club Atlético Cerro ,Club Bolívar , Cruz Azul and Club Aurora , among others.
