Synchronize subtitles with video in VLC player for computers with macOS and Windows

Not many people know that most of the film products that are broadcast on TV and in cinemas are adapted specifically for the country of hanging. And often, watching a movie, we can hear vocabulary or jokes inherent only in our culture. Worst of all, this is when the translation of a phrase does not correspond to the original one in any way. Therefore, if you like to watch films and TV series in the original, but your vocabulary is not yet large enough to fully understand speech by ear, then subtitles come to the rescue. But, the video and the text of the subtitles do not always match, sometimes you have to manually synchronize.

Players that can handle subtitles often have menus for synchronizing text with audio. Let’s look at the example of the most common VLC player that works on all desktop operating systems: Linux, macOS and Windows. You can download it on the official website of the program .

How to add and sync subtitles in VLC player

Step 1 In the open VLC media player, click on the File (macOS) / Media (Windows) menu and select Open File , or press the keyboard shortcuts for macOS – ⌘Cmd + O, for Windows -Ctrl + O

Step 2 Select a movie or TV series and click Открытьto open the video file

Step 3 In the menu bar, click Subtitles and select Add Subtitle File

Step 4 Select a subtitle file and click Открытьto add subtitles

You can add multiple subtitle tracks, and then select the desired one in the Subtitle menu  →  Subtitle track

Step 5 Click Window (macOS) / Tools (Windows) and select Sync Subtitles

Step 6 A window will appear on the screen where you can change the track sync and subtitle speed. Enter your value manually or use the and buttons – move the delay to minus if the subtitles are ahead of the video or to positive if the subtitles are late

But sometimes it is not always convenient to open the subtitle synchronization menu, it is much more convenient to do this using keyboard shortcuts while watching. To do this, in macOS, click Jto align the subtitles back and Hforth in time, for Windows – this Hand G; in addition, if you see that the sound is lagging or ahead of the video, use Fboth G(macOS) / Jand K(Windows) to sync . The increments are in milliseconds, so it can be easily tweaked exactly that way.

There is an even easier way to align subtitles using VLC’s pre-sync feature. Once you find that the subtitle text does not match the video:

  1. Press ⇧Shift + Hwhen you hear a sentence that you can easily recognize
  2. Click ⇧Shift + Jwhen reading the same sentence in subtitles
  3. Click ⇧Shift + Kto fix sync

Now you can calmly sit down to watch your favorite TV shows and films, and watch them without worrying about poor language skills. By the way, watching a video in the original language is very good at helping to learn and perceive a foreign speech by ear.
