Preliminary operations

As mentioned at the beginning of the post, most smartphones, tablets and PCs now include backup systems that automatically store files locally (eg on external drives) and in the cloud, then on the Internet. Before moving on to heavy artillery and installing deleted data recovery software, take some time off and see if you can restore deleted photos using one of your backups.

Restore deleted photos from Android / Google Photos

If you use an Android terminal , you will most likely manage your photos with Google Photos , which in addition to serving as a gallery allows you to store photos and videos online without space limits. When you delete a photo from Google Photos, it is not deleted immediately: it ends up in a temporary folder (called Trash) where it remains available for 60 days. If you’ve accidentally deleted photos and it’s not been 60 days since they were deleted, you might find them right in the Google Photos Trash.

Therefore, proceed to open the Google Photos application, press the  button located at the top left and select the Trash item from the bar that appears on the left. Then keep your finger pressed on the thumbnail of the first photo to be recovered, select the others by putting the check mark next to their previews and press the arrow icon that appears at the top right to bring them back to the roll of your device. Easy, right?

Note: Google Photos is also available for iOS and for computers (Windows / macOS). On iOS it allows you to recover photos in the same way as Android, on a computer instead you have to act from the web panel of the service (accessible with any browser by logging in with your Google account).

Restore deleted photos from iOS / iCloud

The app Photo of iOS includes some kind of trash that end up all photos and videos removed from your device. The contents remain there for about 30 days, after which they are permanently deleted to free up memory space.

To view the contents of the iOS “Recycle Bin” and retrieve any images present in it, open the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad, select the Albums tab located at the bottom right and select the Recently Deleted album . Then, press the Select button located at the top right, select the thumbnails of the photos to be recovered and “tap” first on the Recover button (bottom right) and then on the Recover photo item to confirm the operation.

If the iCloud Photo Streaming and / or Photo Library services are active on your device , which provide a backup of photos and videos to the cloud, you can recover deleted photos from iPhone and iPad also by operating from the Web. All you need to to do is connect to  the iCloud website , log in with the Apple ID associated with the device from which you deleted the photos you want to recover and click on the Photos icon  in the screen that opens.

At this point, select the item  Recently  deleted from the left sidebar, use the key combination  Ctrl + click  or  cmd + click  (on Mac) to select the images to restore and click the Recover button   at the top right to bring the items back selected in your iCloud main album.

Restore deleted photos from Windows Phone / OneDrive

If you have a Windows Phone and have activated the photo sync function with OneDrive , retrieve your shots (and your videos) by starting the OneDrive app  , pressing the button   located at the top left and selecting the item related to the  Recycle Bin from the menu that opens.

Next, select the thumbnails of the photos and videos you want to recover, press the arrow icon   located at the bottom right and you’re done.

Alternatively, if you prefer to act from a PC, you can access OneDrive from the browser  with the Microsoft account you use on your phone, select the Trash item   from the left sidebar, select the images to be recovered and press the Restore button   located at the top to the right. Easier done than said!

Restore deleted photos from Windows

If you are using a computer equipped with Windows 10 or Windows 8.x and you have activated the file history function , you can restore the photos you accidentally deleted by going to the folder in which they were kept (eg. Pictures ) and selecting the History item from the Home tab of the File Explorer.

Alternatively, if you prefer, you can click on the Start button (the Windows flag located in the lower left corner of the screen), search for “restore file” in the menu that opens and start the procedure to restore files with File History by clicking on ‘appropriate icon present in the search results.

If you are using a PC equipped with Windows 7 , you can attempt to recover your photos (and other files) using the backup function included with the operating system. For more information about it, see my tutorial on how to backup Windows 7 .

If you don’t have backups at your disposal, you can try the programs to recover deleted files that you find in one of the following chapters of the tutorial.

Restore deleted photos from macOS

If you’re using a Mac , you can try to restore your photos by following three ways: 1) using the macOS Photos app 2) using Time Machine backups 3) using iCloud Trash .

If you use the macOS Photos app, you can restore photos in the same way as seen on iOS. Then start the Photos app on your computer, select the Recently deleted album from the left sidebar, click on the thumbnails of the images to be recovered and click on the Recover button located at the top right.

Not using the macOS Photos app? In this case, you can enter Time Machine and attempt a “manual” recovery of the photos you are interested in (assuming they are included in the backups you still have at your disposal). You find everything explained in my Time Machine tutorial .

If you then have the iCloud photo synchronization services active, you can access the  iCloud website and recover your photos from the Recently deleted album as I explained to you earlier in the paragraph dedicated to recovering deleted photos from iOS . If you don’t have photo backups at your disposal, try the programs to recover deleted files that you find in one of the following chapters of this tutorial.

Restore deleted photos from Dropbox

Have you activated the synchronization of photos with  Dropbox and / or have you accidentally deleted some images stored on this service? No problem. Connect to  the Web version of Dropbox , log in to your account and click on the Deleted files item   in the left sidebar. Then click on the icon of the photo to restore, press the Restore button  and that’s it.

Restore deleted photos from WhatsApp

Have you deleted discussions and / or photos from WhatsApp and don’t know how to recover them? Don’t panic. If, as I hope, you had the chat backup function turned on, you can recover everything by uninstalling the app and reinstalling it on your smartphone. You find everything explained in detail in my tutorial on how to restore WhatsApp backups .

Programs to restore deleted photos from PC

If you didn’t have backups of your photos to draw from, I’m sorry, but you just have to cross your fingers and hope that data recovery softwaredo their duty. Or rather, hope that the portion of the disk on which the images to be recovered were hosted has not been completely overwritten by other information. In this regard, if you need to recover photos that were on the internal hard disk of your PC, do not install the data recovery software directly on it: paradoxically you would risk deleting the photos by overwriting the disk sectors that hosted the images. Instead, connect your PC’s internal drive to another computer or install data recovery software on a secondary drive (if you have one). Having made this necessary premise, let’s get to the point and see which data recovery software you can rely on.

DiskDrill (Windows / macOS)

If you are looking for an easy and fast method to recover deleted photos from your computer, I can only recommend Disk Drill : one of the most advanced and effective data recovery software, capable of combining advanced data recovery technology and an interface very simple and neat user.

The software is available for both Windows and macOS and allows you to recover all major photo formats: JPG, BMP, PNG etc., including camera RAW files . It also allows you to view previews of the data to be recovered and to prevent future accidental deletion of files and folders through Recovery Vault , a feature that allows you to keep your most important data in a reserved area of the disk, even in case of cancellation and subsequent emptying the Recycle Bin.

Disk Drill can be downloaded and used for free in a version that offers all the functions just mentioned and allows you to recover up to 500MB of data . To get the full version of the software and recover more data, you need to purchase a license with prices starting from 93.53 euros.

If everything is clear so far, let’s move on to the practical side of the matter. To download Disk Drill on your PC, connect to the official website of the program and click on the Free Download button . Then, open the resulting .exe file and click on the Instal buttons and Yes , to finish the setup. During installation, make sure you have an active connection (as you may need to download some components from the Internet). If you are asked to restart your PC, accept.

Now, to recover deleted photos on your PC, start Disk Drill and press the Yes and Continue buttons , then choose whether to activate the Recovery Vault data protection function and / or whether to share anonymous usage data with the program developers and click on the Let’s Get Started button .

Then select the drive and partition from which you intend to recover deleted photos (e.g. the computer disk) and use the drop-down menu that appears on the right to choose the recovery method to use ( All recovery methods , Quick analysis , In- depth analysis , Search for lost partitions , Allocate existing file system data or Protected data not deleted ). I advise you to choose All Recovery Methods .

Once this is done, press the Search for lost data button and wait a few seconds for all the recoverable files to be analyzed. You will be automatically shown a menu through which you can view the recoverable data based on the category of belonging: Images , Videos , Audio , Documents , Archives or other files .

To retrieve the photos, select the Images icon , choose the type of view to use (via the View menu located at the top) and check the boxes for the shots of your interest. If you want, you can also filter the search results by size or cancellation date , by calling the Filters menu located at the top.

Finally, click on the Recover button , at the bottom left, select the destination path of the files to be recovered (by clicking on the folder icon ) and click on the OK button , to complete the procedure.

If you want to add files or folders to the Recovery Vault protection, so as to preserve them even in case of deletion and emptying of the Recycle Bin, select the Data Protection item from the Disk Drill sidebar, press the OK button , do it and, if necessary , move the toggle for Recovery Vault to ON . Then, click on the Add button , select the items to protect and that’s it.

Do you use a Mac ? In this case, you can download Disk Drill by connecting to the program’s official website and clicking on the Free Download button .

When the download is complete, open the .dmg file obtained, drag the Disk Drill icon to the Mac Applications folder and start the program. Then, click on the Start button , type in the Mac administration password and select the drive from which you want to recover the photos (by pressing the Recover button for the latter).

At this point, to limit the search results to images only, select the item Images from the All files drop-down menu located at the top. Then browse through the folders in the search results and locate the images of your interest. By pressing on the eye icon , you can also see a preview in real time.

Finally, check the boxes corresponding to the images to restore, click on the Recover button (top right) and select the destination path for the files.

The trial version of Disk Drill for Mac only allows you to view the recoverable files, but not to export them: to unlock this feature you need to purchase a license for the program, with costs starting from 93.53 euros.

EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard (Windows / macOS)

EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is a program for the recovery of deleted files that ensures an excellent compromise between effectiveness and ease of use. It is in fact equipped with an extremely intuitive interface (fully translated into Italian) and is able to operate on a wide range of devices: smartphones, tablets, hard drives (both internal and external), SSD drives (both internal and external), SD cards, USB memories, cameras etc. It even works on formatted / damaged drives and RAW partitions.

As far as photo recovery is concerned, the EaseUS program is able to handle all major graphic file formats (JPG / JPEG, TIFF / TIF, PNG, BMP, GIF, PSD, CRW, CR2, NEF, ORF, SR2 , MRW, DCR, WMF, RAW, SWF, SVG, RAF, DNG etc.) and also allows you to preview them before restoring.

Compatible with both Windows and macOS , EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is available in various versions: one free, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free , which allows you to recover up to 500MB of data (or 2GB, if you share the software online) and one payment, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional , without limitations on the amount of data to be recovered, which has prices starting from 66.69 euros. The Professional version can be downloaded for free but, if it is not activated with the purchase of a license, it only allows you to view the files to be recovered and not to export them.

That said, let’s take action. To download EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional on Windows , connect to the official website of the program and click on the Free Trial button . If, on the other hand, you prefer to download EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free , connect to this other page of the EaseUS website and click on the Download free button .

When the download is complete, whether you have downloaded EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional or Free, open the .exe file obtained and answer Yes to the warning that appears on the screen. Then make sure that there is a tick in the box relating to the EaseUS license conditions (bottom left), click on the Install now button and wait for all the components necessary for the software to work to be downloaded and then installed. If you do not want to send anonymous usage statistics , click on the Customize installation item (bottom right) and uncheck the box for this option.

Now press the Start Now button , to access the main screen of EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, select the icon for the drive from which you want to recover deleted photos and click on the Scan button , at the bottom right, to start searching for files recoverable.

Once the scan is complete, to view only the images in the search results, click on the Filter item located at the top and check the Graphics option in the menu that opens. Then use the left sidebar to “browse” the folders containing the photos to be recovered, select those of your interest (by ticking the relevant boxes) and press the Recover button (bottom right), to indicate the folder to export them to.

If you want to preview the images before recovering them, select them and click on the eye icon , located at the top right.

If you are using a Mac , please note that you can download EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard using the links I have provided previously and clicking on the entry for the Mac version of the software. To install the program, instead, you have to open the .dmg package obtained and drag the EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard icon into the Applications folder of the Mac. Easier than that?

Tenorshare UltData (Windows / macOS)

UltData by Tenorshare , a company with over 10 years of experience, is an excellent data recovery software for Windows and macOS that allows you to act on photos and many other types of files, such as videos, music, emails, Office documents (Word , Excel, PPT), PDF etc. It can restore deleted, lost or formatted files from Windows or macOS Recycle Bin, hard drives, USB devices, SD / XD / CF cards, digital cameras, flash drives and other devices.

It works in just three steps, without requiring advanced knowledge from the user: scan, preview and data recovery. You can try it for free in a version that, however, only allows you to view the recoverable data: to actually restore the files you need to purchase a license, which on Windows has prices starting from 45.99 euros / year while on macOS starting from 55 , 99 euros / year.

That said, let’s take action. To download Tenorshare UltData for Windows or Tenorshare UltData for macOS , connect to the program’s website and click on the Free Download button .

Later, if you are using a Windows PC , open the .exe file obtained and click first on Yes and then on Install , to start downloading all the components necessary for the software to work and then installing them on the PC. When finished, press the Start button to start the program. If you do not want to send anonymous usage statistics, expand the Install Setting section (bottom right) and uncheck the Agreed to participate in the customer experience improvement plan! .

If you are using a Mac , on the other hand, open the .dmg package you downloaded and drag the Tenorshare UltData icon into the Applications folder on your computer: that’s all! Then open the software by calling its icon and entering the Mac administration password .

Now, to recover your photos (or any other deleted file) from your computer’s internal drive or external media (e.g. a USB hard drive or SD card), put the check mark next to the name of the drive where find the data of your interest and click on the Scan button (bottom right), to start scanning.

Alternatively, you can limit the scan to a folder such as your desktop , documents , downloads or the Trash by selecting the appropriate icons at the bottom.

At the end of the analysis, use the buttons you see above to limit the search to certain types of files (eg. Photo for photos, Videos for videos and so on), browse the folders you see in the left sidebar and select the items to recover (which you can preview by pressing the icon with squares located at the bottom right). Finally, click on the Recover button (bottom right), select the folder in which to save the recovered files and that’s it.

If the scan does not return the desired results, you can try a more in-depth analysis of the disk by clicking on Didn’t find the missing data? Try using Deep Scan that appears below, waiting for the end of the scan and then browsing the results obtained based on their type (in the list on the left). For recovery, just select the files of your interest and press the Recover button .

The operation of Tenorshare UltData is similar on both Windows and macOS, so the indications I have given you are valid for both operating systems.

However, to act on the most recent versions of macOS (from macOS 10.13 High Sierra onwards), you must first start the operating system in recovery mode (holding down cmd + r during boot) and disable the SIP protection system, the csrutil disable command in the Terminal (accessible via the Utility menu , at the top).

After using Tenorshare UltData, I advise you to reactivate the SIP, restarting the Mac in recovery mode and then giving the command csrutil enable in the Terminal.

Tenorshare UltData for iOS (Windows / macOS)

Have you lost files from your iPhone , iPad or iPod touch ? Then I think you would do well to try Tenorshare UltData for iOS : it is an excellent software, available for both Windows and macOS, thanks to which it is possible to recover deleted data from iOS and iPadOS devices in a very simple way.

It supports all models of iPhone (from iPhone 4 onwards), iPad (including Air, mini and Pro) and iPod touch and all the most popular versions of iOS / iPadOS, allowing the recovery of photos and many other contents, such as messages and attachments, contacts, videos, Safari history, WhatsApp chats and attachments, Messenger chats and more. It also works in “desperate” situations, such as after jailbreak , update, factory reset etc.

The program can be downloaded and tested for free, in a version that allows you to find out which files are recoverable: to actually restore the data, you need to purchase a license, which on Windows has prices starting from 49.95 euros / year on macOS from 59.95 euros / year.

That said, to download Tenorshare UltData for iOS on your computer, connect to the program’s website and click on the Free Download button .

When the download is complete, if you use Windows , open the .exe file obtained and click first on Yes and then on Install , to first start downloading all the components necessary for the correct functioning of the software and then their installation on the PC. When finished, click on the Start button to launch the program.

If you do not want to send anonymous usage statistics, expand the installation workstations section (bottom right) and uncheck the Accept to join the user experience program! . If the request to download the Apple Drive components appears on the first launch of the program , wait for the procedure to be completed.

If you are using a Mac , open the .dmg package obtained instead , drag the Tenorshare UltData icon into the Applications folder of the computer and start the latter, calling its icon and entering the Mac administration password .

Now you have to choose how to recover data from your iOS / iPadOS device: if you intend to recover data directly from the device, select the Recovery from iOS device tab , connect your iPhone / iPad / iPod touch to the computer using the supplied cable and enter the device unlock code (if you use Windows, make sure you have iTunes installed); if you have iTunes or Finder backups saved on your computer and you want to extrapolate data from them, go to the iTunes Backup File Recovery tab and select the backup of your interest from the screen that opens, while if you want to recover data from backups iCloud, select the iCloud Backup File Recovery tab, enter your account credentials and then select the backup from which to draw the information.

On Mac , the interface of Tenorshare UltData for iOS is a little different than the Windows version, and instead of tabs, there are buttons to access data recovery from iOS devices , iTunes backup and iCloud Backup .

Once you have selected the recovery method most congenial to you, regardless of the operating system in use, check the boxes relating to the data you wish to recover (eg. Messages and Attachments , Contacts , Reminders , Notes , Photos , Videos and Calendar ) and click on the Start Scan button , to go on.

At the end of the scan, use the left sidebar to navigate between the various types of recoverable data, the top menu to filter between deleted / existing files, check the boxes relating to the files to be recovered, press the button to start the recovery ( bottom right) and choose the folder to export them to. Easier than that?

In conclusion, I would like to point out that Tenorshare UltData for iOS also offers a function that restores the functioning of the operating system on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch following the Apple logo block, black screen recovery mode loop or other issues without deleting the data. To use this, select the Repair operating system option and follow the onscreen instructions.

Wondershare dr.fone (Windows / macOS)

If you have accidentally deleted photos from your smartphone, I highly recommend you try Wondershare dr.fone : a well-known and reliable data recovery software, compatible with both Android (where it also works without root, although in a more limited way) and with iPhone , capable of recovering deleted photos , videos, audio files, messages, contacts, WhatsApp data and other data from the devices in question. It is available for both Windows and macOS and is very simple to use, in fact its user interface is extremely intuitive and is fully translated into Italian .

To download the trial version of Wondershare Dr.Fone , connect to the official website of the program and click on the download button for Windows or macOS , depending on the operating system in use on your computer. When the download is complete, if you are using a Windows PC , open the .exe file obtained, click on the Install button , wait for all the files necessary for the software to work from the Internet and press the Start now button to complete the setup.

If, on the other hand, you are using a Mac , open the downloaded .dmg file , click on the Accept button and simply drag the Wondershare Dr.Fone icon into the MacOS Applications folder .

Now you just have to connect your smartphone to your computer, via cable, start Wondershare dr.fone , click on the data recovery button and wait a few seconds for the device to be recognized. If you use an iPhone , make sure your PC has iTunes installed (on Mac it is pre-installed; from macOS 10.15 Catalina onwards, however, it is not necessary as it has been replaced by the Finder). If you are using an Android device , make sure that USB debugging is enabled in the developer options (as shown on the screen by Dr.Fone himself ).

Then, again if you are using an Android terminal , accept the installation of Connector and dr.fone on your smartphone (two apps necessary for the correct functioning of Wondershare dr.fone ), answer in the affirmative to the request for communication with the PC and, if you are rooted on your device, allow the relative permissions .

When the screen for choosing the data to recover appears, choose the tab for Phone Data Recovery (the first in the left sidebar). Alternatively, I would like to point out the possibility of performing data recovery from SD card , recovery from broken phone and, in the case of iPhone, recovery from iTunes backups .

Therefore, affix the check mark next to the Gallery item , click on the Next button and wait a few seconds for the scan of the phone memory to be completed. If your device is subjected to the procedure root , check the box Scan for deleted , go ahead, grant the root permissions to Dr.Fone on the phone and wait for it to finish scanning the device.

Finally, select the thumbnails of the photos to recover , click on the button to recover data on the device or on the button to recover data on the computer (depending on whether you want to save the recovered photos directly on the phone or on the computer), confirm and the that’s it.

Please note that the free version of Wondershare Dr.Fone allows you to view the recoverable data from the memory of your mobile device and recover some of them. To recover deleted data without any limit, however, it is necessary to unlock the full version of the data recovery module, with prices starting from 39.99 euros. More info here .

PhotoRec (Windows / macOS / Linux)

PhotoRec  is one of the best free data recovery software available. It allows you to recover photos, videos, documents and many other types of files from hard drives, flash drives, SD cards and other devices. It is quite easy to use and is compatible with all major computer operating systems: Windows, macOS and Linux. Its only drawback is that on macOS and Linux it comes without a graphical interface, so it must be used from the command line.

That said, to download PhotoRec on your PC all you have to do is connect to the program’s website and click on the item relating to the operating system in use on the latter. (I will use Windows for the tutorial ). When the download is complete, open the zip package that contains PhotoRec, extract the contents in any folder and start the qphotorec_win.exe executable  . In the package you will also find TestDisk: another free application that allows you to recover lost partitions and restore disks that no longer start, but for the moment you don’t care!

At this point, click on the Yes button  , use the drop-down menu  Select a media from which to perform the recovery operation  to choose the drive for the device from which you intend to recover your photos and choose the main partition of the device (which it should be the one called  FAT32 ,  NTFS  or  exFAT ).

Next, put the check mark next to the  FAT / NTFS / HFS + / ReiferFS  and  Libero items , press the Browse button and choose the folder in which to save the photos recovered from PhotoRec. After this step too, press the File formats button , then click  Reset (in the window that opens) and select the types of files to find with PhotoRec. To recover JPG and PNG images, select  jpg JPG picture  and  png Portable / JPEG / Multiple Image Network Graphics .

Finally, click on the OK and Search buttons  , wait a few minutes for the scan to complete and you will find all the photos recovered by PhotoRec in the folder you have chosen via the “Browse” button.

Recuva (Windows)

Recuva  is one of the best data recovery software available for free on Windows. It allows you to recover any type of file from hard drives, USB sticks, SD cards and other storage units. To download it to your PC, connect to its official website and click first on the Free Download button  (below) and then on Download .

When the download is complete, open the rcsetupxx.exe file , click on the Yes button and complete the installation process of Recuva by selecting Italian  from the menu for choosing the language (top right) and pressing the  Install  and  Launch Recuva .

At this point you just have to follow the Recuva wizard. Then click on the Next button  , choose the option to recover the  images , select the drive from which to recover the deleted photos and click first on  Next  and then on  Start  to start scanning the device.

When the scan is complete, put the check mark next to the photos to be recovered, click on the Recover button   and choose the folder to export them to. Images that have no visible previews are not recoverable because they are damaged.

App to restore deleted photos from smartphones and tablets

For the reason explained above (overwriting of data on the disk), I tend to advise against using applications to restore deleted photos on smartphones and tablets. In principle, it is better to connect the phone or tablet to the computer and act from there, but if for any reason you cannot use the PC, know that there are also apps that allow you to recover deleted data directly from portable devices.

If you have a smartphone or tablet Android , I strongly recommend you try out DiskDigger which is completely free (at least as regards the photos JPG and PNG , to recover other types of files you need to buy a paid version of the app which costs 3, 37 euros) and in my tests it proved to be very effective. It works with both internal memories and SD cards, but to give the best of itself it needs root (read my guide on how to root Android if you don’t know what I’m talking about).

Root aside, the operation of the app is disarmingly simple: after installing it on your device, all you have to do is grant it root permissions (by pressing the Grant button   that appears in the center of the screen), refuse the switch to version a payment (by pressing on  No, thanks ) and select the item relating to the memory to be scanned (it should be the one in bold, eg  date  ).

At this point, put the check mark next to the JPG and  PNG items  (if you also want to recover the screenshots and images of the apps as well as the photos taken with the device) and press the OK button   to start scanning the device. When the operation is completed, put the check mark next to the thumbnails of the photos to be recovered, press the Recovery button at the top and choose the folder icon to export the images to a folder of your choice or the cloud icon to upload them to a cloud service.

Should DiskDigger not fully satisfy your needs, you can try Undeleter which is also free and works in a quite similar way.

Undeleter is also available exclusively for Android. Unfortunately, there are no similar solutions for iPhone and iPad. If you need to restore deleted photos from an iOS device, try using EaseUS MobiSaver or iCloud backups as explained above.
