How to put different page numbers in the same document in Word

If you are a student or if you ever had to write a Special Degree Thesis (TEG) you know that placing the page numbers according to the APA standards can become a problem.

How to Put Different PAGE NUMBERS in the Same Document in Word

Writing a document that requires a different numbering by sections in Word is a tedious task. Many prefer to make several documents separately because they do not know how to use this function. It is a problem that has a solution if you know how to divide a document into sections.

Section break in Word

The secret to adding the numbering of the pages is separating the document by sections . If the document has a structured order, half the process for numbering is facilitated.

To make a page break , Place in the part of the text where you want the new section to begin. Go to the Page Layout tab, select the jump option and then next page.

In some versions of Microsoft Word , the page break option is found on the Layout tab .

The new section of the document should now be located on the next page. The advantage of sections is that each one has an independent way of organizing itself.

Check section break

You can check that the page break was done correctly by reviewing the document with the Show all option . To access this option go to the home tab and select Show all.

Paragraph mark and hidden formats will be displayed . If the page break was successful, then the message should appear at the end of the section “section break (next page)”.

Link to the previous one

To be able to add numbering independently of each section, you must unlink to the previous section . Headers and footers are usually linked separately. So if necessary, unlink each one.

Unlinking is done in the header and footer menu. Deselect the Link to previous option .

Add formatting to page numbers in Word

Before adding the numbering to the page, you must first choose the format that the section will have. Select the Insert tab, find the Page Number option and click on Format page numbers .

In the page number format window you can modify the type of numbering you want to place. If it is Roman or Arabic numerals.

Within the format you must indicate where you want the numbering to start from . In the case of being a new section, you must indicate from which section you want the numbering to begin.

You can add the page number in the footer of the document or in the header. Word has default style formats so you can choose the one that suits you best.

Have multiple sections in one document

To create a new section you just have to repeat the previous procedure, with another page break.

All page sections can have different numbering , that is, you can have Roman and Arabic page numbers in the same document at the same time.

You can even have unnumbered sections . Each section also has the possibility to display its first different page. In Word’s header and footer tools it is possible to change it.

An easy way to do it

Word is full of shortcuts and if you are already an advanced user you must know many of them.

If you want to quickly modify or add the page numbering of a document, you just have to position the cursor on the footer and double-click. The header and footer menu is immediately enabled.

Remove page number

To remove the page number from a section or document, just double-click on the footer or access the menu for header and footer. Look for the option to remove footer , click and you will be ready.

Word is the most widely used word processor and it has surely saved more than one student. Facilitating the process of creating your TEGs with its intuitive and easy-to-use graphical interface. Now you just have to focus on making the schedule of activities to do your project.
