Colostomy

Colostomy is an artificial opening that is made to put a part of the large intestine in communication with the outside through a stoma, known as a neo-mouth or artificial anus.

Classification

The neboca or artificial anus is classified into:

  • Ascending colostomyor cecostomy: This is not a frequently performed procedure.
  • Transverse colostomy: Usually performed to divert stool temporarily, its surgical indication is the relief of an intestinal obstruction.
  • Descendingor sigmoid colostomy : This is usually a permanent intestinal bypass, where rectal cancer is the most common cause.

Treatment

Treatment is medical , dietary, enterostomy therapy, and odor control . People should quickly become a normal diet, in the early postoperative stages. No special diets are prescribed, only provide recommendations in order to achieve a better adaptation of the intestine to food.
