However, the extension of the railroad reduced the use of carts and stagecoaches in the West , especially over long distances, since they were much slower and more dangerous due to the robberies that occurred on the road. Animal traction for transport in Cuba dates back to the discovery and conquest of the island by the Spaniards in the year 1492 . Horses were imported and were used to transport cargo, to transport troops. They were then widely used by wealthy people and the public.
