20 Facebook Messenger Tips and Tricks You Didn’t Know About

All your friends and acquaintances and their parents are on Facebook , so it should come as no surprise that Facebook Messenger is the second most popular messaging app in the world. With 1.3 billion monthly active users , the app is second only to WhatsApp (2 billion). Since many of you are using Facebook Messenger, we thought it would be nice to give you some tips and tricks that we know you will enjoy.

1. You can use nicknames!

You don’t have to look at serious names all the time. Facebook Messenger makes it easy to set up nicknames for your contacts.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Press the iicon   in the upper right corner of the conversation.
  4. Select  Nicknames.
  5. Select the contact you want to give a nickname.
  6. Write the nickname.
  7. Select  Set.

2. Mute conversations

As much as you love your friends and family, they can talk too much. I do this when I need to focus on something or I can’t look at messages every few seconds.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Press the iicon   in the upper right corner of the conversation.
  4. Select  Mute.
  5. Select how long you want to mute the conversation.

3. Change the colors of the conversation

Color-coding your conversation can make it easy to identify contacts and give each chat a personal touch.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Press the iicon   in the upper right corner of the conversation.
  4. Select  Topic.
  5. Change your theme or color.

4. Activate dark mode

Not only will dark mode make Facebook Messenger look cooler, but if you have a phone with an AMOLED screen, it can also save battery life. It is also more easy on the eyes when speaking in the dark.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the upper left corner.
  3. Activate dark mode.

5. Don’t you have a Facebook account? Use your phone number!

You do not need to have a Facebook account to use Facebook Messenger. Install the application and register with your phone number.

6. Use Messenger.com to chat from any browser.

Whether you’re at work, in a meeting, or just prefer to use your computer to chat, Messenger.com is a great substitute for official apps or the Facebook page. Just head over to  Messenger.com  and catch up on your conversations.

7. Send audio messages

Audio messages are available for those times when writing a long message is too annoying.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Find the microphone next to the text box.
  4. Press and hold the microphone icon while speaking. Release it when done.

8. Use Facebook Messenger as your SMS application

Many of you already use Facebook Messenger for most of your messaging needs, so you could use it for SMS as well. This feature only works on Android.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the upper left corner.
  3. Select  SMS.
  4. Activate the function.
  5. You will be asked to verify your decision. Press  Yes.

9. Submit your location

Sending your location to a friend is much easier than trying to explain where you are.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Tap the four-dot menu button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select the  location.
  5. You can share your location live for 60 minutes bypressing the big button at the bottom.
  6. If you want to pinpoint a specific location, press the red location button in the lower right corner.
  7. Select your preferred location and select  Send PIN.

10. Make voice and video calls

This may seem like a basic feature, but I have met many people who did not know it existed. To start a voice or video call, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. In the upper right corner you will see the phone and video camera icons.
  4. The phone icon is for making audio calls. The video camera icon is for making video calls.
  5. These options are also available by tapping in the imenu   .

11. React to messages

You don’t have to write a full message to let your friends know how you feel about something they wrote.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Find the message you want to react to.
  4. Long press the message. A series of reactions will appear to choose from.

12. Reply to a specific message

Conversations can heat up and cover various topics very quickly. Sometimes you answer questions too late or reply to multiple messages simultaneously. Help avoid confusion by letting people know what message you are replying to.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Find the message you want to reply to.
  4. Long press the message. A series of reactions will appear to choose from. Tap the arrow on the far right.
  5. Submit your answer.

Alternatively, you can touch the message you want to reply to and then drag your finger to the left.

13. Delete messages

I’ve sent a lot of messages that I shouldn’t have sent. Fortunately, Facebook Messenger now allows you to delete them.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Find the message you want to delete.
  4. Long press the message.
  5. The Deleteoption   will appear in the lower right corner. Select it.
  6. You can select  Delete for yourself. This will delete the message only on your side of the conversation.
  7. It appears  oneoption  Delete all  if the other person has not yet read the message.

14. Create a poll

Trying to make a decision in a group chat can turn into a never-ending discussion. The easiest way to handle it is by casting a vote, and Facebook Messenger makes it easy with Polls.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a group conversation.
  3. Tap the four-dot menu button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select  Polls.
  5. Complete your question and possible answers.
  6. Pleaseclick on  Create profile  .

15. Share a story!

Stories are all the rage these days, and Facebook Messenger has them too . For those who are behind the times, a story is more or less a look at their daily adventures. You can record an image or video ( up to 20 seconds long ) and share it with your friends and fans. These can be adorned with stickers, drawings, typing, and special effects. Also, you can select who can see it.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Find the Your Storysection   just below the search bar.
  3. Press the +sign   to the left.
  4. Select an image, take one with the camera, or write text.
  5. Use pictures, letters, stickers, and other features to embellish your story.
  6. Submit it by tapping the button in the lower right corner.
  7. You can also use the camera icon in the upper right corner of the Facebook Messenger home page.

16. Secret conversations are encrypted

Sensitive conversations require more private chats . Facebook Messenger doesn’t want you to leave, so it has provided secret conversations. These are encrypted. You can even set a timer on messages to self-destruct after a specified period of time.

As always, privacy comes with trade-offs . Entering secret conversation mode will disable most of the fun features in Messenger, including support for GIFs, payments, group messages, voice calls, and video calls.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Tap the iicon   in the upper right corner.
  4. Select  Go to secret conversation.

17. View message requests from strangers

When you don’t have a contact added, chats are sent to message requests. I prefer not to deal with strangers on Facebook, but sometimes people I know are sent to my message requests. It is good to check it from time to time.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the upper left corner.
  3. Select  Message requests.

18. Block a contact

Whether you are dealing with stalkers, enemies, criminals, or just people you don’t like, you can easily block them.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Tap the iicon   in the upper right corner.
  4. Select  Block.
  5. Now you can select if you want to block this person on Messenger and / or on Facebook.

19. Send money

You can also send money to your Facebook Messenger contacts! It’s a great way to settle money transactions while staying in conversation.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Tap the 4-dot menu button in the lower left corner.
  4. Select  Transfer money.

20. Change the default emoji

By default, all conversations on Facebook Messenger have the thumbs up emoji as an option. However, you can change it ! It’s a nice trick that you can use to make conversation fun.

  1. Open the Facebook Messenger application.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. Tap the iicon   in the upper right corner.
  4. Tap Emoji.
  5. Select the one you want to set as the default emoji.
