How it is made
YI Dome X is a camera characterized by a good build quality, both in terms of materials, and in terms of assembly care. Its design is modern and minimal, a factor that makes it ideal for installation in various types of environments.
It has a 110 ° angle of view (FOV – Field of View), which combined with the ability to rotate 340 degrees on the horizontal axis and 95 degrees vertically (10 degrees below and 85 above), allows you to cover a field of view. almost complete , leaving no area of the environment in which it is positioned uncovered.
The camera is equipped with a 2.4 GHz WiFi module (so make sure your WiFi is not set to only 5 GHz) and can record videos in 1080p (Full HD) resolution at 20 fps (frames per second). Night vision is facilitated by 8 integrated infrared emitters.

At the bottom of the YI Dome X we find:

Room registration in the app
Room recognition via QR code or by selecting model
Connecting the camera to the WiFi network
After logging in , all that remains is to associate our room with the application by clicking on the “+” at the top right. In the next screen we must select the room model in our possession. We can identify the model from the scrolling menu or click on the QR code on the screen where we are and scan the QR code under the YI Dome X.
Now we power the camera, using the power supply and the supplied cable. The camera will make an initial rotation and the LED under the lens will flash yellow, while the speaker will emit the following message ” Waiting to connect “.
We enter the data of our WiFi network to which we want to connect the surveillance camera into the application and go on. At this point, a QR code will appear on the display of our smartphone that we will have to frame the camera, as indicated in the screen.
If the QR code has been correctly recognized, the video surveillance camera will be associated with the app and our YI account, as well as our WiFi network. From here on, we will be able to view everything the camera takes, even remotely via app and PC software.
The YI Home application is well made and feature rich . In addition to being able to see the footage in real time and the videos stored on Micro SD, in the main interface we find other functions, to record a new video, take a photo, start a two-way audio call, listen to the audio captured by the microphone of the camera in real time, set full-screen viewing of the footage, rotate the camera to your liking using a virtual joystick, consult the set bookmarks, the latest alerts and notifications received, connect to the cloud and create a Timelapse .

Above you will find two screenshots of the application interface in portrait and fullscreen mode. In the settings, in addition to the aforementioned functions, it is possible to enable others. There is also an advanced motion tracking mode with which Dome X can automatically follow the movements of subjects in an environment and, if necessary, send a notification together with a 6-second video clip, on the our smartphone, more info here .
YI Dome X is also able to distinguish people from pets, while the sound recognition system concerning abnormal noises can detect different types of sounds, such as the breaking of a glass / window or the cry of a child. All these detections can be managed through a notification system on a smartphone, in a completely customizable way.
Through the app, we can also set fixed times in which to turn the room on and off, as well as carry out these operations, at any time we want, with a click.
Recording quality
Video
By carrying out various tests, both in good and low light conditions, the video quality and details are truly appreciable . If in most cases, in good light conditions all the cameras perform well, Dome X also stood out in low light conditions, where good design work and components make the difference. In conditions of low light or complete darkness the excellent calibration of the infrared emitters is appreciable, which even with close subjects, do not tend to burn the rest of the frame. The resolution in Full HD 1080p , compared to classic 720p cameras, also helps to have greater detail when digitally zooming in on a particular shot.
Conclusions and where to buy
Analyzing all the various aspects, we appreciated:
- An excellent video quality, especially in relation to the price, rich in details and sharp in any light conditions;
- Clean and filtered audio;
- Build quality and materials of good workmanship;
- Well crafted software with many features, bug free and also available for PC.
What we are a little sorry about, in our opinion is the failure to implement the new USB Type-C port, which is going to replace the micro USB, which at the moment is more widespread.
In conclusion, we can only recommend the purchase of this product to anyone who wants to keep an eye on home or workplace environments with a very low cost and a qualitatively valid product. In the same price range, there are no products of the same level as YI Dome X.
The presence of a microphone and speaker allow you to comfortably communicate via smartphone with those near the surveillance camera, in a more than satisfactory way, a useful feature if you want to keep an eye on an elderly person, for example, with whom you want to communicate. The smartphone application, as well as the PC software, have a clear and easy-to-use interface, and the software version for computers is hardly found in devices of this price range.
The system for detecting anomalous noises and movements of people or animals is unlikely to go wrong, warning us with fairly timely notifications, which arrive within a few seconds.
