What is a Facebook page and what is it for?
A professional Facebook page or Fan Page is a social marketing tool that can be very powerful when it comes to:
- Help you reach new audiences who don’t even know you exist.
- Develop a relationship with people who can first be just followers, but who tomorrow can become clients and, what is better, ambassadors and prescribers of your brand.
- Humanize your brand and your business.
- Take advantage of listening to detect areas for improvement and the need for possible new products or services.
- Promote your products and / or services.
- Reach the audience that really interests you with your ads with proper targeting.
Is Facebook Still Worth It?
Of course! Without a doubt. Out of urban myths and legends. Facebook remains the largest social network with more than 2.2 billion active users worldwide, ahead of YouTube and WhatsApp.
Is your audience among these more than 2,200 million users? Then you also have to be on Facebook and take advantage of everything that this tool can offer you to connect with your audience.

Why a Facebook page and not a profile
Facebook gives us the possibility to connect with other people through basically three options:
- Personal profiles
- pages
- Groups
A still common question when using Facebook as a marketing tool, beyond a social network, is: Why a page and not a profile? When am I interested in creating a Facebook page and why?
- Profiles are personal accounts linked to an individual and are intended to connect with other people for non-commercial purposes. The profiles have a limitation of “friends” (currently 5,000), which are managed with requests.
- The pages are designed for businesses, brands, communities or professionals without limitation of followers and give access to a series of options and tools (which we will see in this tutorial) and that do not have the profiles.
Apart from not being able to access this series of tools that will allow you to improve the efficiency of your marketing efforts on Facebook, if you use a profile for commercial purposes, Facebook could close it for you. Sooner or later. So think about whether you deserve to take the risk.
Of course, to create a Facebook page or Fan Page, it is essential that you have a personal profile. Now we will see.
Can I create a Facebook page without having a website?
As power, of course you can. But I do not recommend it. Why?
Because your Facebook page is not really yours. It belongs to the company that manages this social network. This means that, at any moment, it could close, and your page and your content would disappear with it. Thus, without further ado.
Your website, on the contrary, is yours. As long as you pay for your domain and your hosting.
Don’t you have a website yet? I have a good new for you.
It does not matter that your budget is limited, that you do not have external resources and that you have no idea of programming. Currently you have the possibility of creating a professional website yourself with a minimal investment and in a few minutes.
CREATE A WEBSITE ALMOST FREE
And now, we are going to get down to business and learn how to create a Facebook page step by step.
How to create a Facebook Fan Page
In order to create and manage a professional Facebook page, it is essential that you have a personal Facebook account or profile. So if you don’t have a profile yet, now is the time for you to do so.
Access the Facebook website through your search engine or directly from the Facebook URL .
If you already have an account, log in and access. If you don’t have it, it’s time to register.
Once inside your account or profile, go to the top menu bar and click on the “Create” option. A series of options will be displayed to you. Click on “Page”.
First steps
You will land on the next screen, where you will have to choose between creating a company or brand page or a community or public figure page (not necessarily famous).
- The company page option is business-oriented (with physical location or exclusively online)
- The option of community or public figure is more oriented to blogs or communities and professionals, whether they are famous or not, who bet on what we know as “personal brand”.
Choose an option and click on start.
Next, fill in the requested information:
- The name of your page (that of your business or brand, your own, that of your blog or community)
- A category that describes the activity of your page (when you start writing, a menu with suggestions will be displayed, as you can see in the screenshot below).
Fill in the rest of the information: address, city and postal code . The telephone is optional. You can select the option that your address is not displayed on your fan page , although your city and province will appear.
Profile image and header
Next, you will be asked to upload a profile photo , which can be your company or brand logo, your own photo, etc. You don’t have to do it right now, you can continue to build your page and do it later.
Now you will have to do the same but with the cover photo .
It can be from your company, your team, or any related or inspiring image.
It is very important because this header image is like a cover letter that will identify you to your users and help you get more fans, likes and visits.
Later, you can also replace the photo with videos, share videos and photos, upload a presentation, offer promotions, announce sales, … You can change it as many times as you want, just like the profile image.
This cover image would be equivalent to the banner of the Home page of your website or the showcase of your physical business. So it is important that you give it the importance it deserves to help you with your goals at all times.
If you don’t have great design skills and you don’t have external resources, you can use a free tool like Canva .It is a very simple and intuitive design tool that offers you everything you need to be able to create a good Facebook cover image, starting from scratch, uploading images and incorporating elements or based on templates that you can “tune” freely.
Get your first followers
You already have your page and now you need to get your first followers. How to get them?
Easy. Using people who already know you and who are within your reach within Facebook itself: your “friends” or contacts from your personal profile, from where you are managing your new page.
To do it easily, Facebook itself gives you the option to invite them directly.
You can do it manually, invite all your contacts at once, or make a selection. You can do it both from the computer and from the mobile.
These first followers will be the ones who start to give life to your new page, interacting and sharing your publications or directly your page among their own contacts so that you can reach more people.
Later it will be time to “professionalize” this recruitment of followers. We will see later.
Fan Page Optimization
You have already created your page and you have achieved your first followers among your contacts, but now the time has come to optimize it so that it has the maximum performance.
Create a username
One thing is the name of the page and another is the username.
By means of the username, preceded by an @, you will make it easier for them to find you and to be mentioned (tagged) in other publications, either from other pages or personal profiles, with a direct link to your page.
People who see your page tagged in the publication of one of their friends, contacts to the page they follow, will be able to click on the name and land directly on your page.
In this way, you will be able to reach more people, make yourself known to new audiences and attract more followers.
It can be the same name as your page, but preceded by an at sign: @ yourpagename.
To add a username to your Facebook page, just go to the left column and click on the “Information” section. On the next screen, click on the option “Create user name for the page”.
Also, by adding a username, you can have a custom Facebook URL, instead of an endless URL with a sequence of numbers. This will also make it easier for them to find and contact you.
Includes information of interest
Beyond adding the basic data of your business or professional activity, such as your website or email address, Facebook gives you the option of including information that may be of interest to your customers or users and help you to be more accessible and better reach the people you care about.
This is especially important if you have a physical business, since you can include the exact location, indicate how to get there, public transport options or nearby parking availability, hours of operation. etc.
To add and edit this information, you just have to go to the “Information” section in the left column and click on the “Edit information” button.
A window will appear where you can edit all your information.
Add a call to action
Facebook gives us the option to include a CTA (Call To Action) or call to action in the header of our page.
We can edit this call to action and change it whenever we want depending on what interests us that our followers or visitors do preferably at all times.
Facebook gives us different options. You just have to click on the button that you will see below your header image and a window will appear where you can select the call to action that interests you.
Create a story to better connect
Stories connect, “humanize” and make it easier for people to identify with a person or brand.
Facebook also gives us the option to include a story on our page to help us connect and generate more trust and engagement.
As with the rest of the information on your page, you can edit and replace this story whenever you want.
To create a story, go to the “information” section in the left column. On the next screen, on the right, you will see the “History” section. Click on the link and add your story, title and an image on the next screen.
Configuration options on Facebook
Before I told you that, apart from other advantages, with a Facebook page we have many options available that are restricted for accounts or personal profiles.
We have already seen some, but now we are going to dig a little deeper. You don’t have to go crazy either XD, because you can waste a lot of time. Just take a look at what’s important to your page.
If you go to the top menu of your page, you will see a tab called “Settings”.
By clicking on the tab, you will land on a screen where you can edit a lot of options to optimize and control the performance of your page.
From here, by clicking on the different sections, you will be able to edit questions related to:
- the visibility of your page
- enable options, filters and restrictions
- assign roles to your team members so they can manage the page
- customize your page template and tabs
- directly manage your messages and notifications
- configure your messenger options, etc.
Assign page roles
By creating a Facebook page, you automatically become its administrator.
From there, you have the option, depending on your needs, to assign roles to other people so that they can participate in the management of your page. Just like to create a page, you need to have a personal Facebook profile, in order to grant someone a role on your page, that person must also have an account on this social network.
At any time, as the administrator of the page, you can delete the assigned roles or change them.
There are six types of roles, and depending on the role you assign to each person, they will be authorized to perform certain tasks.
To assign a role, you just have to enter the username on Facebook or the email of that person, and choose the role that you are going to grant them based on the tasks they have to perform on your page.
- Administrator – Has control and authority to perform any task, including assigning roles and setting page options.
- Editor: you can edit the page, create and delete posts, send messages, reply and delete comments, block people, create ads and promotions, access statistics.
- Moderator: You can post messages, reply to and delete comments, block users, create ads, and view statistics.
- Advertiser: your authorization is limited to creating advertisements and promotions and accessing statistics.
- Analyst: can only view statistics.
- Job manager: You can post and manage jobs.
Customize your page templates and sections
At any time you can customize the templates and the sections or tabs of your page from the “Settings” – “Templates and tabs” menu.
The templates include default buttons and tabs that adjust to different types of pages depending on your business. In this way, you can opt for the standard template or choose the one that best suits your business.
You just have to go to the “Templates” section and click on “Edit”.
Next, a window will appear with the different templates available (standard, company, shopping, restaurants and cafes, shopping, non-profit organization, etc.).
You can also customize the sections or tabs that are displayed in the left column of your page (information, events, videos, photos, etc.). You can select the order, delete some sections and add new ones.
Access to statistics
Another advantage of the pages with respect to personal profiles are the statistics that Facebook makes available to us to monitor and improve the performance of our activity on the social network.
To access the statistics of your page, go to the top menu and click on the “Statistics” tab. Next, you will land on a screen where, to begin with, you will be able to see a summary of the main statistics of the page in the period of time you select (today, yesterday, last 7 days, last 28 days).
From the menu in the left column, you will be able to access the data and the evolution of the different parameters of your page: followers, “likes”, reach, promotions, visits, etc. You can select the time periods that interest you.
Ad Center: advertising on Facebook
Last but not least. Another advantage of having a Facebook page, rather than a personal profile, is that you can access the Ad Center to take advantage of the benefits of the Facebook advertising platform.
Many page managers complain that organic reach on Facebook is “not what it used to be.”
What is Facebook Edge Rank
Like Google or Youtube, Facebook has its own algorithm, known as Edge Rank. This algorithm is what determines which posts are shown to users on their Facebook walls based on their interests.
This means that the fact that a person follows your page does not guarantee that all your posts will be shown to them. If a person interacts with your page often, they will be more likely to be shown your posts.
If a post receives a lot of interaction, the algorithm will understand that it is “popular” and will show it more.
Create Facebook Ads
But there are no guarantees. After all, Facebook is a business and it wants us to spend money on advertising.
The good thing about this?
That the Facebook advertising platform allows us to create ads and promote publications with quite low investments and reach many people. Not only that, but it allows us to reach the people we are really most interested in reaching, since the segmentation possibilities that Facebook offers us are very powerful, thanks to all the information available to all of us.
To promote a post, you can do it directly by clicking on the “Promote” button that Facebook will show you whenever you post. Not only that but it will also remind you when your post starts to work and it will encourage you to promote it to reach many more people.
You can also directly promote your page to make it known and get followers.
To create an ad, you can directly access the ad manager from the “Create” tab in the top menu of Facebook, by clicking on the “Ad” option.
Or access the Ad Center from the top menu of your page. From here you can also track all your ad campaigns.
