What is really an email? Definition and examples

This translates to “email” or “electronic mail”. It is, as the concept itself anticipates, it is the correspondence that we have been able to maintain through electronic devices . That is, the digital version of what a letter would be .

Its character is asynchronous , that is, the information is sent without the recipient having to be connected. It will be when he accesses his email profile that he will find the news and also when he can, if he wishes, answer you, being, in the same way, unnecessary that you are on the network or not. This is due to its storage and forwarding working model, with an intermediary, the server .

To send mails you need an address , as would happen if we sent a letter to an acquaintance, detailing their postal address on the envelope. In this case, it includes two parts separated by a symbol, the @ . The part on the left indicates who the user is and the part on the right indicates the machine used to host the account.

It is curious to indicate that the origin of the email is prior to the appearance of the Internet , given in 1962 . It arises when several users connect to an IBM 7090 for another purpose but who ended up sending internal messages between them.

If we look at sending through the network, we have to wait for the year 1971 , when, through ARPANET , the first network, the QWERTYUIOP text was sent, as a test, to the computer next door.

In just 5 years, sending emails was already common , one of the most used aspects on the internet at that time.

 Functioning

  • Two users each have an email account. Even when these belong to different email servers , they will contact you so that the message can be transferred.
  • Through a provider or a mail client, the sender writesa message. All kinds of attachments can be added to this .
  • The software used contacts the serverthrough the SMTP protocol to transfer the message and order it to send it.
  • This server must identify the computer to which it must be sent, consulting the network’s DNS server to indicate which server the destination address is associated with.
  • With the answer, the server connects to this other and transfers the informationto the computer, where it will be saved.
  • The recipient will find this message when they start their session, that is, when they start a connection via HTTPand access their profile in the mail application.

In the same network, there is no server query, the message never leaves it.

 Shipping and receiving process

The sending of the information includes:

  • The writing of the message. You have a board to write a message. This can currently be customized with size changes, inclusion of emoticons, etc.
  • The file attachment. You have the option of including digital files such as images, audio tracks, Words, compressed files, PDFs … You can upload them from your computer or from your accounts in the different hosting services.
  • The shipment itself. You have to include the recipient’s address and click on the send button.

The reception is given considering the following:

  • The message appears in your inbox. Depending on its origin and other aspects that are increasingly studied, you can go directly to one or another folder that you have created.
  • From this you can see a summary that includes:
    • Sender. You will see the person’s name or nickname. In the event that he has not yet made the configuration of his profile, you will see his address directly.
    • Subject. It is a field that serves to indicate the subject of the message, the subject, as its name indicates. When responding, the subject is added, at the beginning “Re:”; if it is a forwarding, “RV:”.
    • Date. The date on which the information was received is indicated.
    • Other aspects. On some occasions, information such as the size of the content, the recipients, the existence of attachments, if it is a priority, if it has a tracking mark and even the beginning of the message can be included.
  • By clicking on it, we open it and have access to the complete messagethat the sender has written and, if there are any, to the attached components.
  • Once read, you have several options:
    • Reply. You will write a message to the sender, who will become the recipient. You can also reply to all the people on the list.
    • Resend. The mail will be sent to someone else. A copy is released on the newsletter and you include a third person (second recipient).
    • Mark as spam. You are going to separate this email, categorizing it as junk or spam. With this, the program studies the information and, in the future, it may send it directly there.
    • Archive. It is saved on your computer and you can consult it.
    • Delete. You will move it to a junk content folder.
    • Move. You move it to one of the folders you have created.
