What is Ecotax

The used car ecotax is a tax that the owner of a vehicle must pay when buying a car that has a high CO2 emission. But not all used cars purchased have to pay this tax!

In this study we will try to shed some light on this issue, helping to clear the field of many uncertainties. Let’s find out what it is!

What is the Ecotax

First of all, it should be remembered that the Ecotax is a tax created with the aim of discouraging the purchase of highly polluting vehicles. In this way, such an operation is discouraged, creating a sort of compensation between the greater environmental burden, and that required of the motorist’s wallet.

However, bear in mind that this tax, which must be paid at the time of purchase , is due only if the new car has CO2 emissions exceeding 160 grams per km. Therefore, if you buy a vehicle with emissions below this limit, the motorist will not have to pay any Ecotax.

The amount of the Ecotax

Having clarified the above, we also specify that the Ecotax is higher the higher the polluting emissions.

In particular:

  • emissions between 161 and 175 g / km: 1,100 euros;
  • emissions between 176 and 200 g / km: 1,600 euros;
  • emissions between 201 and 250 g / km: 2,000 euros;
  • emissions over 250 g: 2,500 euros.

Who has to pay the Ecotax

Having clarified that the Ecotax must be paid only if the emissions of the new car exceed the limit of 160 g / km, it is also good to remember that the tax is one-off . Once paid, there will be no extra tax to pay.

But what happens to used cars ? How does the used car Ecotax work ?

In principle, if you are proceeding with the purchase of a used car, you will pay the Ecotax only if the car has been registered starting from 1 March 2019. If, on the other hand, it is a car that is already registered before this date, then no Ecotax will be paid, regardless of its emissions.

In conclusion, the Ecotax is also paid for used cars, but only if they were registered after 1st March 2019 !

Which cars pay the Ecotax

As we have remembered, the most accurate way to be able to understand if your car pays the Ecotax or not is to check the level of polluting emissions, indicated by the manufacturer.

By doing so, you will realize that they will probably pay the Ecotax_

  • large petrol cars, such as luxury cars (also subject to super tax), SUVs, off-road vehicles;
  • several autodiesels that have characteristics of particular power and size;
  • commercial vehicles exceeding 160g / km, which will likely end up encompassing almost all petrol models.

On the other hand, small or medium-sized cars, electric cars, hybrid cars, medium or low-power diesel cars will not be subject to the Ecotax.

The Ecotax is not a super tax

On the sidelines of this study, we also want to clarify another very important aspect: the eco-tax is not a super stamp . They are two different taxes!

In fact, the Ecotax is paid when buying the car only if the indicated emissions are exceeded. Payment is made only once at the time of purchase, and not every year as is the case with the super tax, which is added to the ordinary tax if the car has an engine power greater than 185 kW (252 horsepower).

We hope that these indications have been enough to have a little more clarity on this topic, and that thanks to them you can have cleared the field of every cloud. Of course, you can contact us for more information and even more specific details about this tax for used cars and the methods of regular payment!
