Weapons in Fallout 76: a basic guide

We talk about the types of weapons and their characteristics, about the repair and modification of weapons, as well as about ammunition

Damage types

Each weapon has a specific type of damage. Depending on the enemy’s armor, some damage will be effective, some will not. If you have the Observation ability, in VATS mode you can find out what type of damage is absorbed by the enemy. There are three types in total:

  1. Marked with a shield icon. Such damage is dealt by sharp or blunt melee weapons, as well as bullets.
  2. Marked with a lightning bolt icon. This includes laser, plasma, fire and ice damage.
  3. Radioactive, respectively, is marked with a radiation icon and comes from the radioactive environment, creatures and some weapons.

Characteristics, weapon upgrades, repairs

The weapon has the following characteristics:

  • Rifle:damage, rate of fire, range, accuracy, weight.
  • Melee:damage, speed, weight.

Each weapon will have some characteristics high, some low. But, weapons can be upgraded at the weapons workbench. Depending on the selected modification, a certain characteristic will be added (or decreased). Upgrading requires certain resources, which can be obtained by exploring the world or disassembling trash on workbenches.

You should also pay attention to weapons with special abilities, which are indicated by an asterisk. For example, Somerset, which reduces the effectiveness of enemy armor by 50%:

To repair a weapon, you must use the Weapon Workbench. To do this, you will need resources obtained by exploring the world, or by parsing unnecessary things.

Ammunition

For ranged weapons, you need ammo. They are obtained either from the corpses of your opponents (mainly those who use small arms), or you can craft them in a repair workbench. You can also buy ammunition from special trading robots.
