Time in the cinema: ellipsis and rhythm

In audiovisual language (cinematographic or television), natural or real time is fragmented by means of montage or edition of the image. In other words, time is broken by audiovisual narration. We can identify different forms of temporal fragmentation with respect to the plans and their edition or assembly .

The ellipsis

We can find ellipsis , which consist, through editing , of omitting small times between actions. This operation or montage technique is performed to omit or eliminate certain natural time that does not contribute anything interesting to the audiovisual narration.

We can also find the time jumps , which are, like the ellipsis , natural times omitted in the narrative action, but in this case, of great length. Temporal jumps are always defined with respect to the considered narrative present tense. We differentiate between two types of temporary jumps:

  • Flashfoward: which is a time jump into the future.
  • Flashback: time jump to the past, previously defining the present time in the narration that concerns us.

Play speed

From the point of view of the narrative rhythm, there is also the possibility , in editing or editing, of not only omitting natural times, as we have seen previously, but it is also possible to modify the speed of the passage of time, shaping the speed of reproduction of the image. Thus, we can find two fundamental effects: fast motion and slow motion .

The slow motion refers to the effect of expansion of the natural time, slowing action. This is accomplished by shooting or recording a greater number of frames per second, then projecting them at normal speed. It is a widely used editing or editing resource to emphasize an action or convey more drama. When the number of frames captured is very high, we are talking about the super slow motion effect , very useful in sports broadcasts, for example.

The fast camera is the opposite effect, in which natural time contracts, achieving it by capturing a lower number of frames per second. It is a montage resource widely used, for example, to highlight the comic aspect of an action.
