The curious relationship between Mark Twain and Halley’s Comet

Mark Twain was an American humorist and writer, whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, he wrote highly successful works such as ‘The Prince and the Pauper’ or ‘A Yankee in King Arthur’s Court’, but is best known for his novel ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and its sequel ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’.

He worked as an apprentice to a printer and as a typesetter, and was involved in writing articles for his older brother Orion’s newspaper. After working as a printer in various cities, he became a pilot navigator on the Mississippi River, worked with little success in gold mining, and returned to journalism. As a reporter, he wrote a humorous story, ‘The Famous Jumping Frog of Calaveras County’ (1865), which became very popular and attracted national attention to himself, and his travel books were also well received. Twain had found his vocation.

He achieved great success as a writer and speaker. His wit and satire received praise from critics and colleagues, and he became friends with American presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

He lacked financial acumen and, although he made a lot of money from his writing and lectures, he wasted it on various businesses and was forced to file for bankruptcy. With the help of businessman and philanthropist Henry Huttleston Rogers he finally solved his financial problems.

Twain was born during one of Halley’s Comet visits to Earth and predicted that “I’ll go with him too”; died on the comet’s next return to Earth, 74 years later, on April 21, 1910 in Stormfield, New York.

William Faulkner called Twain “the father of American literature.”
