LPG system overhaul

The car with LPG system , just like petrol, diesel and methane, need periodic revision : change, however, the controls to do , costs and deadlines. In this article I will give you all the information you need on how and when to do the LPG system overhaul .

The acronym GPL derives from the acronym of Liquefied Petroleum Gas  and this you probably already knew! What you probably don’t know is  how much it costs to have an LPG car overhauled  and when it should be done. Let’s find out together.

Revision of LPG cylinders

Wrongly, on some forums there is talk of  overhauling LPG cylinders . In reality, a particular revision of the LPG cylinders  should not be made  because, in line with the provisions of Italian regulations, the LPG system  includes special solenoid valves that prevent any risk of fire linked to the presence of the storage cylinders.

The Italian legislation does not foresee a  revision of the LPG cylinders  but a  periodic replacement . When to change the cylinders? LPG cylinders must be replaced after ten years.

LPG system overhaul

The rules for  overhauling the LPG system  are the same as those for the classic diesel and petrol engines. What does it mean? That the first  LPG car inspection  is scheduled for the fourth year of the car.

First LPG car inspection : the deadline is 4 years from the first registration. To determine the  deadline  , the year, day and month of enrollment are used. If the LPG car was registered on 10 August 2018, the first  inspection  must be carried out by 31 August 2022.

Subsequent  revisions  of the LPG car  must be done every two years. The deadline to be considered as the deadline for subsequent revisions is always by the end of the month in which the first registration was made. So, returning to the previous example, for an LPG car registered on 10 August 2018, the second  LPG overhaul  must be carried out by 31 August 2024, the third in 2026 … and in 2028? In 2028, that is 10 years after the purchase date of the vehicle or the LPG system , the LPG cylinders will have to be  replaced as  well as the usual overhaul .

How much does the overhaul of an LPG system cost?

The  LPG car overhaul  has no more expensive costs. The cost  is standard based on the organization you are addressing.

  • The cost is 45 euros if the  LPG car inspection must be done at the Motorization Civil.
  • The cost rises to about 67 euros if the  LPG car overhaul is carried out at any partner workshop.

It is clear that  LPG cars  do not need a specific overhaul and, in this context, do not require extra maintenance costs compared to a diesel or petrol car.

How much does it cost to replace LPG cylinders?

As stated, the difference linked to the “expense to be incurred” factor is felt in the tenth year of life of the vehicle or of the LPG system . It is clear that if the LPG system  was installed at a later time (aftermarket LPG system), the 10 years run from installation and not from vehicle registration. On the contrary, if the LPG system  is standard, the 10-year term is counted from the first registration.

If your  LPG system  is very old and is approaching 10 years, you should worry about the  mandatory replacement of cylinders by law rather than the  revision  . How much does it cost to replace the cylinders of the LPG system? The price can fluctuate a lot depending on the car model, the type of system, the mechanic involved and the labor costs required by the workshop.

Generally speaking, the  costs to replace the cylinders of the LPG system  are between 25o and 550 euros, and do not change whether the system  is standard or if the system was added at a later time.

What happens if I don’t replace the LPG cylinders?

The  non-replacement of LPG cylinders  makes punishable by law with a  financial penalty  (a fine) up to 594 Euros. The accessory sanctions provide for the withdrawal of the registration certificate and the administrative detention of the vehicle.

To regulate the  replacement of the LPG system tank  (ie cylinders) was the circular n. B76 / 2000 / MOT of November 16, 2000, issued by the Ministry of Transport.

What happens if I don’t do the LPG system overhaul?

For failure to inspect an LPG car, or rather, if you are subject to a control by the police and you have an expired LPG car inspection , the  fine  ranges from 169 to 680 euros. For the rest, what was seen in the article dedicated to car review applies
