Is there free roaming in the UK?

The United Kingdom is one of the most frequented destinations in Europe, so it is not surprising that, if we have everything prepared to leave, we are concerned if roaming is free or we will have to pay to enjoy our data rate and when making or answering calls.

Since June 15, 2017 , the date on which roaming disappeared in Europe, we have enjoyed the contracted rate in Spain for free when visiting any country in the European Union .

It is possible to use the mobile in the same way, even if we are in front of Big Ben or visiting the remains of the Berlin wall, except in the rates with many gigs, which limit how much data we can consume while roaming .

If we exceed what we have contracted, the connection speed in the case of data will be slowed down in some operators, as if we go beyond the included calls, and we will have to pay for those we make.

Roaming in Europe was eliminated in 28 countries , which are as follows:

Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Kingdom Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden.

Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway have free roaming even though they are not from the EU.

The exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union , also called Brexit , is a very complex issue. For now, we know that the United Kingdom will leave the European Union in a short time, but the agreements reached still do not cover all the details, and roaming is one of the aspects to be negotiated.

For the moment, all Spanish operators will keep roaming free , including Movistar (with its subsidiaries O2 and Tuenti), Vodafone (also Lowi), Orange (together with Amena, Jazztel and Simyo) and MásMóvil (with Yoigo and Pepephone).

Of course, in the future the conditions and prices to use the mobile in the United Kingdom may change , especially if an agreement is not reached with the European Union that regulates the price that operators pay each other for the consumption made by the displaced customers.

UK no longer belongs to the EU

Finally, December 31, 2020 was the date for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union and the issue of Brexit has been clarified. The situation is the same, that is, the operators will maintain the same conditions as before that date.

This does not mean that in the future the different operators may change their roaming conditions, but for the moment they remain. For example, Vodafone has clarified that it does not modify anything and that its customers can continue calling and receiving calls, SMS, etc.

In any case, if you plan to travel to the United Kingdom in a few months, you can speak with your operator days before the trip and verify if indeed the roaming will remain as it has been until now, that is, you will not have to pay any additional surcharge.
