How to update the PS4 without connecting it to the Internet

There are many reasons why you may want to update the PS4 without having it connected to the Internet : you have changed the hard drive, a previous update has failed, or simply because you do not want or cannot connect it to the Internet. In any case, below we are going to teach you how to update the PS4 without an Internet connection, only with the help of a USB pendrive and, yes, a PC that does have Internet.

How to update the PS4 without connecting it to the Internet

In order to update the console without connecting it to the Internet, you will need your DualShock 4 controller with its corresponding USB connection cable, a PC or Mac connected to the Internet, and a USB Pendrive that has at least 4 GB of space available .

Download the update file

The first step is to access the SONY download page from the PC or Mac , where we can download the update file that we will need to install on the console. Here we must click on the ” PS4 system software update file ” section and save the downloaded file, called ” PS4UPDATE.PUP “, on our PC or Mac .

Prepare the USB pendrive

Once we have downloaded the update file, we must prepare the USB pendrive. To do this, we have to insert it into the PC or Mac and create a folder called “PS4” in its root. Within this, we must create another one called “UPDATE” (watch out for capital letters), and within this we must copy the file PS4UPDATE.PUP.

Thus, if the pendrive drive is D, we would have D: PS4UPDATEPS4UPDATE.PUP

Once we have the file in place, we can disconnect the USB flash drive from the PC or Mac, and insert it into the PS4 while it is off.

Update PS4 without Internet

Now that we have the pendrive ready and connected to the PS4, we can proceed with its update. The first thing we must do is connect the DualShock 4 controller to the console with its USB cable. This is important, if it is not connected by cable, the safe mode of the PS4 will not work , which is what we must do in the next step.

To start in safe mode we must press and hold the PS button on the remote (the one we normally use to turn it on) until we hear two beeps (not one as is normal). After the second beep we can release the PS button on the controller and we will only have to wait for the safe mode of the console to load.

Now a menu will appear, in which we have to select the third option, called ” Update system software ” or “Update System Software”. To select it, we move with the directional pad of the controller and press the X button.

After that another menu will appear, in which we have to select the option called “Update from USB storage device”. After doing so, a last message will appear indicating that the console is going to be updated, and that it will automatically restart to start the process.

Click on Update and the console will restart and begin to update. Once the process is complete, the PS4 will boot normally with the new version of your operating system already installed and running. We can remove the USB pendrive and start using the console in a normal way, since we will have already updated it without having to connect it to the Internet.

It is important that throughout this process the console does not lose power, so if we are on a very rainy day and our area is prone to power outages, or there is a maintenance of the electrical network or similar, it is advisable not to update that day and leave it for another time, for simple security.
