How to try Windows 10X on your PC

In the past few hours, one of the final builds of the new “lightweight” Windows 10X operating system has leaked online.

The build 20279 Windows 10X is one of the last release before the so-called RTM . It is therefore the final version of the operating system based on Windows Core OS, which Microsoft initially designed for dual-screen devices and then expanded to those with single screen. The operating system will not be released to the public , but will initially be launched on new devices intended for the educational sector to challenge Chromebooks during the course of 2021 , and then arrive on other devices – including dual-screens – in 2022, with the support of Win32 programs that it does not currently have. You can see a preview of single screen operation in the video below.

However, this does not mean that you can easily install it on your computer , indeed it is strongly discouraged to do so , even if there are already some very detailed guides . The build is not compiled and there is currently no ISO to perform a traditional installation, but you need to create your own compatible installation media.

 

Tidbit from the Windows community today: arm64 and amd64 rtm escrow builds of Windows 10X have been published by Microsoft and are being downloaded right now. Don’t expect ISOs. FFUs will undoubtedly start circulating today / tomorrow.

Try Windows 10X on your PC

You can test build 20279 of Windows 10X on your PC with a virtualized installation easily and without risk thanks to the work of the community.

 

 

 

Download the Windows 10X build image from this address , unpack it and follow these steps:

  1. Open Hyper-V Management Console bypressing the Start key and typing “Hyper-V” or by finding it in applications.
  2. In Hyper-V Management Console, click Action>  New  >  Virtual Machine to display the New Virtual Machine wizard or proceed for a quick creation .
  3. Under Virtual hard disk, select the flash image. vhdx downloaded and start the virtual machine.
