How to tell if someone has turned on your computer

Basic actions to find out what they did on the computer in your absence

Sometimes users are faced with an unpleasant situation – someone turned on their computer without asking. Of course, you can always set a password or use a more complex protection method. However, if you suspect that a stranger was already working on your PC, you can easily identify the intruder. In this article, we will tell you what you need to do to find out what you were doing on your computer in your absence.

  • Check the security log. Open the “Control Panel”, select the “Administrative Tools” menu and click on “Computer Management”. Then launch Event Viewer and select Security from the Windows logs. There you will see information about when your computer was turned on and off.
  • Check out the browser history. If you see pages of sites that you have not visited, then someone went online while you were away. True, if the story has been cleaned up, then you will not see anything.
  • Check the Trash and Downloads folder. Downloaded or deleted files remain there.
  • Look at recently opened files. To do this, press the Win + R combination and in the window that opens, enter the shell: recent command. Of course, a stranger can clean this folder. But this will be further proof that someone turned on your computer.
  • Find out when specific programs were last launched. Go to the Program Files folder, enter “* .exe” in the search engine and sort the files by access date. This way you can see at a glance when exactly you opened your applications.
