Why limit frames per second (FPS)?

How and why to reduce the FPS value in games

The frames per second (FPS) in a demanding game showcases the hardware capabilities of your PC or laptop. However, there are situations when you need to limit the FPS value and keep it at a certain level. We will discuss these cases in this article.

In what situations should you limit the number of frames per second

If you have a low clock speed monitor

The FPS value should not exceed the display clock frequency by more than 15%. For example, if you have a monitor with 60 Hz, then the optimal number of frames per second is 70. If you put more, the video card will be wasted. In addition, artifacts in the form of stripes across the entire screen may occur.

When starting old games

Games from 10 years ago that were launched on modern computers can produce 200-300 FPS. However, they were not designed for such powerful hardware. As a result, the main character or NPC can begin to “fly” through the levels with incredible speed, making it impossible to play. Sometimes with a high FPS value there are problems with in-game time, as was the case, for example, in Fallout 4 .

To reduce the load on iron

And the most commonplace reason to enable the limitation of the number of frames per second is iron wear. No matter how expensive your video card with a processor is, they wear out quickly from a powerful load. In the case of a laptop, in addition to heating the components, the battery is quickly discharged.

To get a smoother picture

It is useful to limit the FPS to half the refresh rate or 30 FPS in single-player games from the third person, if the PC pulls at 40 frames, and there is no monitor with adaptive sync. This way you can get smooth gameplay with a beautiful picture, otherwise you will have to lower the settings to achieve 60 FPS. This method is better than half vertical sync as it does not cause input lag.

How to limit the FPS value

Bandicam program

This software is designed for screen capture for screenshots and videos. However, it has a function to limit the number of frames. Set the desired value, remember the activation button and start the game. Press F10 (default) and the number of FPS will decrease to the specified value.

Graphics card settings

You can also limit the number of frames per second through the control panel.

  • If you have an NVidia graphics card, open NVIDIA Control Panel, then 3D Settings and Manage 3D Settings. Find the Max Frame Rateitem and move the slider to the On position. Then set the FPS value.
  • If you have a Radeon Graphics Accelerator, go to Radeon Settings, then Games and Computer Games. Find the shooter, RPG or strategy game you want and set the maximum frame rate for it.
