How to set an expiration on your Telegram messages from the iPhone

Telegram is one of those messaging services that has taken advantage of the privacy problems of WhatsApp, climbing positions in the list of most downloaded in the App Store along with Signal. It is one of the most flexible services, but with a ‘but’: its cache can get out of control and take up too much storage on our iPhone.

But recently Telegram has launched a new option in its settings to stop that, and in passing improve our privacy: now the messages we send in their chats can have an expiration date and disappear completely from their servers and from our terminals. Not just the secret messages: all. Let’s see how to achieve it.

An expiration of 24 hours or a week

Open Telegram and access one of their chats, any of them. Keep your finger pressed on one of the messages to bring up a menu in which you will press ‘Select’ .

In the interface that will appear, click on the option ‘Empty chat’ that will appear in the top bar of the screen. Don’t worry, you’re not going to delete anything.

In the menu that will appear, click on ‘Activate self-deletion’ . A new section will appear where you can select an expiration of one day or one week for all messages sent in that chat from now on.

This setting is not retroactive , so all messages you’ve sent up to the time you turn on self-delete will still be there permanently unless you delete them manually. In addition, it is something that you have to activate in each chat individually (although the configuration will be reflected in all your devices).

The advantage of having this option activated is, as I said, double. On the one hand you make sure that a group with a lot of activity ends up taking up too much space on the iPhone, and on the other hand it is a good way to take care of your privacy so that nothing stays permanently on the Telegram servers.
