How to record a TV show from VLC

How to record a TV show from VLC.VLC is much more than just a media player. Behind its simple appearance, a lot of functionalities are hidden, such as the possibility of converting videos to audio format , repairing corrupt or damaged MP4 videos , or even playing streaming content from other devices through the local Wi-Fi network.

Another one of those extremely useful, but little-known features of VLC is the ability to record content . It basically consists of recording any video/audio that is being played in VLC and saving it as an MP4 file on our PC’s hard drive.

Among the different recording options, VLC allows you to record your PC’s desktop and even configure a capture device such as a webcam. However, if what we are interested in is recording a TV program to be able to watch it at another time , we can do it as follows.

VLC allows you to tune in to TV channels in two different ways. On the one hand, we can use a digital tuner, or if we prefer, there is also the option of using IPTV . Or what is the same, a TV signal that is broadcast over the internet.

Once you have “tuned” the TV program you want to record in VLC, follow these steps:

  • First, make sure that the content you want to record is playing in VLC.
  • Then, in the top menu, click on “ View” and activate the “ Advanced controls ” option.
  • Back in the top menu, go to “ Media -> Open Capture Device”.
  • Go to the “ Capture Devices” tab. If you are using an IPTV signal to play the content, check that in “ Capture mode ” the option “ DirectShow ” is selected . Note: If you are using a digital tuner, check that in “Capture mode” the “Digital TV” option is activated.
  • Go back to the main window of the player and in the lower menu of advanced controls, click on the record icon (red circle).
  • To stop recording, simply click on the red button again.

Once the recording is finished you can find the video file in the general Windows videos folder ( C:\Users\user_name\Videos ). The file will appear with the name “VLC-RECORD”.

As you can see, recording TV programs that are being broadcast live from the VLC player is really easy and practical. If you liked this tutorial you can find more interesting content in the « SOFTWARE » and « MULTIMEDIA « sections. See you in the next post!
