How to delete Windows 10 temporary files

Is your computer not running as fast as it should? Perhaps the solution is to delete the temporary files of Windows 10 , which are stored silently and end up being an unnecessary burden.

These files are stored by Windows 10 to perform specific functions, but over time, all they do is take up space and hinder our use of the PC. Therefore, deleting them is an effective way to free up internal storage on our computer.

How to delete temporary files in Windows 10

To erase the temporary files, the first thing to do is enter the Windows Settings menu -the gear wheel-, which we can access either from the desktop icon or by pressing the Windows key.

Once we are with the Windows Configuration , the next step is to click on System . In the column that we see on the left side, we will see a section that says Storage, from which we can manage everything related to it.

Below we see the fragmentation of hard drives that we have in our computer. But we are left with the option This Computer (C 🙂 to have access to the memory configuration of the main Windows hard disk , which is the one that interests us.

After this we will see the various types of files that decorate our hard drive, but those that concern us are, obviously, in the Temporary Files category.

At this point, and depending on how overloaded our system is, we may have to wait even a few minutes to wait for the screen to load and have access to these documents.

This is where we will see the various temporary files that we have on our computer. To delete them, simply select the ones we want to delete. We can select the options that we think are convenient and, once done, just go down to the button where it says Remove files so that the process starts and our system is a little more decongested.

Microsoft’s own system has a simple utility that allows us to get rid of certain temporary files stored on the computer. To do this, the first thing we have to do is type Space Cleaner in the search box on the taskbar and click on the result that is shown to open the tool.

This will open a window in which we will be shown the amount of space that the system itself has calculated that we can eliminate. Now, from the list of files that can be deleted, we will be the ones who decide with everything we want to delete. To do this, we will simply have to check the box that is shown next to each option and finally click on the Clean system files button .

Previously, we can see the amount of MB or GB that we will recover by deleting all the selected files.

Delete temporary files manually

If we prefer, there is another more direct option to carry out this process. It is about opening Windows File Explorer and accessing the C: WindowsTemp folder . So we can delete them manually in a more direct way. Of course, we must know that to have access to this folder our user will have to have administrator permissions and that this will eliminate temporary files common to all users.

If what we want is to delete files that we do not use for a certain user, then we must go to the folder C: Users usernameAppDataLocalTemp and delete everything that we find inside said folder. Now, it is important to know that the AppData folder is hidden by default, so first of all, we must show it to be able to access that path.

To do this, we go to the View options within the file explorer and check the boxes so that all hidden elements are shown. Next, we can see the AppData folder and access its content.

In any case, it is always more than advisable to erase temporary files periodically, since in many cases, they are documents that are useless and occupy a key space in our system  that can unnecessarily slow down our daily work in front of of the computer.
