How to clean a computer at home

For those who own a computer, there is no one who has not gone through a difficult situation at least once with a problem caused by computer dust. Over time, atmospheric dust accumulates inside the case and on various internal components. It can be composed of many materials, such as scraps of human skin, dispersed through the air by flaking, hair, textile fibers from clothing, bedding and other textiles, fine sand, either picked up from the ground or raised in the air through construction sites, dust emitted by motor vehicles or industrial processes and many others.

What problems can arise from computer dust and how can they be solved

Computer dust, if accumulated in large quantities inside the computer, can cause serious problems. Most problems caused by computer dust are caused by overheating. Symptoms can range from slowness and errors, to the inability to start or use the computer.

Dust from the computer is not only removed during service. It’s a fairly simple operation that anyone can do at home. All you need is a clean brush and a regular vacuum cleaner.

Great attention to the warranty! If the computer’s central unit has a warranty label that would be broken by removing the case, the warranty should be called to have the computer dust cleaned. If the head unit is not under warranty, but only each component inside, individually, you can move on.

Remember – if you don’t hit anything hard and use the brush carefully, nothing will happen. A computer is a very complex device. However, considering that it has been properly installed by a specialist, a simple brush will not disturb the internal components too much.

How to clean a computer at home

Below you have a clip where the procedure for cleaning a computer is described in detail, from the BWD YouTube channel :

First step – remove all cables from the central unit, including the power supply cable

Second step – touch a large metal object, preferably a water pipe, to a place where it is not painted. You can also touch the grounding strips on the outlets, if the outlets are grounded. In addition to computer dust and static electricity can damage a computer.

Third step – once downloaded, you can open the side cover of the central unit. It usually has two screws in the back, one at the top and one at the bottom.

Fourth step – now, if you have access to the inside of the computer and all the components, there is nothing left to disassemble. The cleaning can begin. Turn on the vacuum and keep the hose (without the brush tube) inside the unit to keep computer dust from spreading around the room. Always keeping the vacuum hose near the brush, use the brush to remove dust from the components. The areas where the most dust usually collects are: on the CPU fan, on the video card fan, on the power supply, on the optical drives, if any, on the storage drives (HDD or SSD), on the surface of the video card, and on the side from the bottom of the case.

Once cleaned, just put the cover back on. Then you have to reconnect all the cables and you will notice that the dust problems are gone.

What do you do if your computer won’t turn on?

There is a possibility that the central unit will not turn on after you got rid of the dust from the computer. Do not be scared! It often happens that the dust dislodged by cleaning settles on various plugs and connectors. Thus, imperfect contacts appear. All that needs to be done is to open the cover of the unit again and gently move all the components and all the plugs. You have to make sure everything is in place. Pay special attention to the memory sticks. It is recommended in this case to remove them completely and refit them.

Where the location allows it, a computer can also be cleaned by blowing air with the help of a compressor. But this method is used more in locations that have an outdoor courtyard.

If, however, the problem you had does not disappear after cleaning, then most likely the computer has other problems. In this case, it is recommended to call a computer service. A specialist will help you solve the problem.

If you have problems with the laptop, then it is not recommended to try to disassemble it if you do not know how to call specialists. Laptops are more delicate and it takes a bit of experience to disassemble them properly without destroying the components inside.
