This change can be made through two approaches. let’s go and discover them together.

Change the default hyperlink browser using Windows settings

  • Open Windows Settings on your computer using the Win + ‘I’ keyboard shortcut. Click on the App section.
  • From the options panel on your left, click Default apps.
  • Scroll down a bit and you will find a ‘Web Browser’ section. Here you can select the browser to open by default, each time the command to visit a URL is passed
  • If you are not satisfied with any of the browsers you have on your PC, there is a direct option to visit the Microsoft Store and search for a different app

To make these changes on Windows 11:

Open Settings> Apps> Default apps. Here, click Choose default for link type, which will open a separate Settings page. Now scroll down to find HTTP and HTTPS and select the browser you want to open Excel hyperlinks in.

An alternative approach to change the default browser for Excel hyperlinks is to use the Control Panel.

  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Click to view the Control Panel as categories and click the Programs category

  • You will now see an option called Set your default schedules. Click on it and you’ll be taken to the same Windows Settings page we visited in the process mentioned above
  • Repeat the third and fourth steps of the process seen above and exit the settings page to save these settings

Once all this is done, you will notice that clicking a hyperlink in Excel will open a new page through the default browser just modified.
