Resources – in order to hire any military unit in the game, you need to have iron and wood.
Population – it is necessary in order to train soldiers of any type. Some units require more than one person to escort. Soldiers can be hired in special buildings, which are distributed according to the type of unit. Infantry barracks – for all types of swordsmen and spearmen. The shooting range is for all types of archers. Cavalry barracks – for all types of cavalry and spies. Siege Workshop – for all types of siege weapons and wagons.
Each additional level of the barracks built increases the maximum number of soldiers of a certain type that can be recruited at the same time.
Military units require certain technologies that you must research so that you can recruit them later. You can check what these technologies are when you hover over the question mark on the screen where the units are hired.
Each type of military unit in Empire Online has its own role. Therefore, a good strategist always strives to ensure that all types of military units are always present in his army.
Spearmen are soldiers who provide effective resistance to enemy cavalry. They are cheap and can be hired in large numbers.
Swordsmen are the core of every infantry. Their strength lies in their ability to attack a fortress wall during a siege. Swordsmen fight successfully against archers and spearmen.
Archers – attack the enemy army from a long distance. And the best option is to place them in the garrison of the fortress, because then the strength of their attack increases by 4 times. Archers fight effectively against enemy spearmen.
The cavalry is a military unit that inflicts defeat on the enemy more than all other units, provided that there are a large number of other units that will cover the cavalry on the flanks. It has a particular advantage against swordsmen and archers. She is also the best option for robbery missions, as her movement speed is very high and she has the greatest robbery power.
Siege weapons – created in order to quickly destroy fortress walls during a siege and attack the enemy’s fortress weapons. They are very expensive and their movement speed is very slow. Despite this, they are indispensable for the siege of the fortress. Siege weapons reduce the loss of other military units.
Carts – have a huge carrying capacity. If you want to take more resources with you after a successful siege, then create a sufficient number of carts.
Each unit requires gold upkeep from the moment it is created and mobilized. The only exception applies to the troops that are located in the fortress of the garrison. The more elite a combat unit, the more expensive its maintenance cost. You can check what obsession your army requires every moment when you hover over the gold icon of your village and see the income and expenses report. When your army is sent on a mission, the upkeep is much more expensive.
If you have researched technologies of a higher class corresponding to a unit, but you still have from the previous release, you can improve them using the “improvement” tab of the recruitment screen. You don’t need a population for this. Upgrade cost is the difference between the price of an elite unit class and the price of a lower class unit. The training time will be the same as for the higher class units.
Siege weapons and archer cavalry cannot be upgraded.
If you have enough resources and population, you can upgrade all remaining sets at once. But don’t forget that they will all be queued up.

If you think that the available gold will not be enough to support an army, take measures to provide for it: raise taxes in some provinces, sell resources in the market for gold in return, send your army to rob one of the independent provinces, or send it loot resources in an abandoned empire of another player. Finally, you can disband a certain amount of the army to reduce its maintenance costs.
