As you guide Selene through the hostile alien planet of Atropos, you make your way through various biomes that drastically change the appearance of the world. Every time you die, the game procedurally modifies these environments, so no execution is the same. But only how many biomes are there in Returnal ? Here you will find everything you need to know so that you can keep track of the progress you are making in each of your careers.
How many biomes are there in Returnal ?
There are a total of six biomes in Returnal that you will have to navigate to reach the in-game credits. These biomes are basically different areas in Atropos, altering the environments in which you will face enemies. Each one also has their own bosses that you will have to beat to advance.

- Overgrown ruins
- Crimson trash
- Abandoned citadel
- Echo Ruins
- Fractured waste
- Nether scar
Once you defeat the boss of a biome once, you will be able to collect a key that will allow you to simply go through the door of the next biome without having to fight the boss again in subsequent races. That said, defeating bosses gives you a powerful team, so they’re worth grabbing if you feel like you’re on a hot streak in your career.
Just because you’ve hit the credits and seen all six biomes doesn’t mean you’re completely done with Returnal. You will still need to find all the Sunface fragments scattered across the planet to achieve the true secret ending.
