Word meaning

Häagen-Dazs is a word invented by a Polish Rose Reuben’s wife, in the sixties. At that time, the American public had an attraction for things brought from the old continent. After naming what they did was put a map of Scandinavia on the ice cream jars.

History

During the 1920s, a Polish-born immigrant in New York City named Reuben MattusHe decided to start the ice cream sales business, little by little and at the point of work, also favored by being in the “land of opportunities”, his business grew until it became his profession and livelihood. Reuben’s original goal was to create the best quality ice cream on the market, but for reasons of cost and logistics their early years as the ice cream maker led them to sell a generic quality product. But years later, in 1961, he finally found the conditions to carry out his original plan, which was to create the best ice cream, with the best ingredients and the least amount of air injection possible (at the highest concentration of air, less flavor). Häagen-Dazs originally started with three flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, and Coffee, but soon added flavors from all over the world, such as Belgian dark chocolate or Malagasy vanilla beans.

Two years later, it would incorporate the strawberry flavor to its range , this because I am looking for a way to keep the natural strawberry with a fresh flavor and texture, “like freshly cut”, inside the ice cream, despite having to keep a very low temperature, achieving that it did not have a frozen or crystallized consistency; This technique was patented and is now used exclusively by Häagen-Dazs for the manufacture of all its ice cream based on red fruits.

In a short time it acquired a faithful demand, transmitted orally, its creaminess was one of the causes of its success, which it achieved despite the lack of a deep-rooted history. At first, it only sold to the public in New York City’s gourmet businesses, but it soon spread across the entire east coast of the United States.

In 1974 Häagen-Dazs established its presence in the United States through an agreement with the California dairy Arden Farms to manufacture and distribute ice cream in the western states. In 1976 the first store was opened by Doris Mattus, Reuben’s daughter. Due to its success, brand franchises began to be created throughout the United States and ice cream expanded to all classes. In the 1980s, Häagen-Dazs had to face competition from Frusen Glädjé, another American ice cream brand.

Häagen-Dazs was sold to the Pillsbury company, now owned by General Mills, in 1983. In the United States and Canada, Häagen-Dazs is used under license from Nestlé.1 From the beginning, Häagen-Dazs sought to stand out from the rest by introducing itself like the nobility of ice cream and the ice cream of the nobility, making vanilla ice cream with milk from Switzerland or taking the rioplatense dulce de leche to the rest of the world. Häagen-Dazs was also the first to introduce ice cream bars to the world, with the introduction of the Häagen-Dazs ice cream bar in 1986 . Other innovations followed, with Frozen Yogurt in 1991 and Sorbet in 1993 . In 2008 , the company announced the donation of $ 250,000.Americans to Pennsylvania State University and the University of California Davis to help investigate the phenomenon of collapse of honeybee colonies. The company will also sell a limited edition flavor, the Vanilla Honey Bee, and with part of the profits will finance the research on CCD.2

Description

The ice cream comes in many different flavors and, from its inception, it was tried to sell as a supposedly “super-premium” brand (goal with which its Danish-looking name was created). The highest quality ingredients are used and it is quite dense (very little air is mixed during manufacturing) and no other emulsifier or stabilizer than egg yolks is used, so it has a high fat content. Häagen-Dazs ice cream has to be kept at a significantly lower temperature than most ice creams to maintain its intended firmness. It is sold both in supermarkets and in ice cream parlors. Most of the flavors offered by the company are chocolate , of different kinds, although there are also many blends ofvanilla . Three or four times per season a limited edition ice cream is put up for sale.
