History

Friendster

Founded in 2002 , the precursor to the social media boom, a year before the departure of MySpace , programmer Jonathan Abrams launched Friendster, another of the iconic social networks of this early stage. Friendster is recognized as the first social network to reach more than one million members. Many of its features ended up inspiring some of the biggest networks like MySpace and Facebook , but that’s another story.

Taking advantage of the popularity of the Napster name , which in 2002 was at its peak and was synonymous with controversy, Abrams mixed the words friends and Napster to name his site. It was the social network par excellence until, two years later, it was ousted by the popularity of MySpace.

Based in Mountain View , California , Friendster is backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers , Benchmark Capital , DAG Ventures , IDG Ventures , and individual investors.

The platform emerged as an initiative to help users make friends and even find a partner, so it is vital that users send a recent photograph and have to provide a list of personal interests. The most attractive thing is that the membership is free, unlike other relationship websites. If initially the profile of users were urban residents between 25 and 35 years old, today the network has been extended to other age groups and throughout the world, especially in Asia.
