Etymology

It comes from the Latin amicĭtas, amicitātis, which is derived from amicitĭa , which means ‘friendship’. This, in turn, comes from amīcus , which translates ‘friend’, while the latter comes from amāre , which means ‘to love’.

Generalities

Friendship is a universal value. Convictions, feelings, tastes, hobbies, opinions, political ideas, beliefs, religion are some things in common that can make us become friends with someone. Feeling comfortable with a person, talking and sharing feelings is the beginning of friendship.

friends

The sages and poets of all times have always exalted friendship. Besides love, you need friendship. For the Greek philosophers, it expresses virtue , it is a gift from the gods. Aristotle mentions three types of friendship: for interest, for pleasure and for the good; but only that which arises from good deserves to be called friendship. For Cicero and Seneca , friendship implies harmony, goodwill and affection.

Friendship occurs in different stages of life and in different degrees of importance and significance. Friendship is born when people find common concerns. There are friendships that are born within minutes of relating and others that take years to do so. The true friendship lasts a lifetime.

There can be “friendly” relationships where one person and another type of person (angels, saints) intervene and in an animal way, some call their relationship with a dog that way despite being an exclusively material and sensory relationship; the latter is known as “man’s best friend.” Friendship can also be given even between two or more animals of different species, but as said above it is a bodily relationship without the use of reasoning and freedom where they are only by instinct and not by free decision.

Groups of friends

Set of people who feel themselves when they meet; that is to say, free to act and express themselves, within their principles and their morality, making full use of free will since they know they are highly accepted by the rest of the members of the group.

Types of friendship

Friendship can arise between men and women, boyfriends, husbands, relatives with any kind of bond, people of different ages, religions, ideologies, cultures, social extraction, etc. Even a friendship can be established between a human being and an animal; not for nothing is the dog man’s best friend.

  • Making new friends

Disinterest

For friendship to be true, it is not enough to like each other, you have to take the final step: help each other permanently, without expecting anything in return. The friend is loved for what he is and not for what I am. Friendship is not trading profits. True friendship is largely caring and selfless service. It manifests itself in:

Have confidence

Having confidence in the friend means that we have the moral assurance that he will respond favorably to the hope of friendship that we place in him.

Generosity

Generosity helps us and facilitates giving, which is essential in friendship. Giving and giving is essential in friendship. The true friend is generous and gives, always to effectively help the friend. The selfishness is radically opposed to friendship.

Be loyal

It responds to the fidelity of friendship. Good friends are those who defend the interests and good name of friends.

Be grateful

Gratitude is the most ephemeral of human feelings, gratitude is typical of true friends.

Not being a yoist

The self is a mortal enemy of friendship. Pride and selfishness do not fit in friendship. Pride does not look beyond your person, your own qualities, your interests. He is unable to help anyone.

Making new friends

Making new friends is opening horizons. If ever a friend has paid us badly, it does not mean that it is the case with everyone, the worst thing is to close, we can look for new friends. For friendship to be true, there must be something in common and, above all, stability. Friendship is something that requires stability in dealing. It is an affection, an appreciation that promotes giving, a giving and for this it is necessary to meet and talk. True friendship is largely caring and selfless service.

Demonstration of friendship

Friendship is shown in concern for the friend, being interested in their well-being, their problems and achievements. For this reason, try to meet, communicate or live with him. A friend is the one who is there at all times, the one who lifts you up when you are down. It is in embarrassment that friendship is put to the test. Cicero comments: “Only in danger is a true friend known.”

Religion and friendship

Friendship is considered a vitally important human experience, it has even been sanctified by various religions. In the Poem of Gilgamesh , a Babylonian poem among the earliest literary works in history, the friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu is recounted . The Greco-Romans had, among various other examples, the friendship between Orestes and Pílades .

The Bible immortalizes the friendship between David and Jonathan (1 Samuel 18: 1-4), which overcame adversity (1 Samuel 19-20) until death (2 Samuel 1:25) and which survived in the memory of the heart (2 Samuel 9: 1 and 21: 7). The Greek Bible notes, “A faithful friend is priceless” (Ecclesiastical 6:15; 7:18).

The canonical gospels relate how Jesus gave God’s friendship with men a face of flesh. The Gospel of John emphasizes, for example, the friendship that Jesus of Nazareth had for Lazarus of Bethany (John 11). In that same Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples at the Last Supper : “Greater love has no one than this, to lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). The Church Fathers identified in the Gospel of John the figure of the ” disciple whom Jesus loved ” with John the Apostle , which is why John is attributed the patronage of friendship.

Popular culture

Friendship relationships have been profusely narrated, both in the world of literature and in film and television, to such a degree that although a truly complete list would be impossible, it is easy to identify them in almost any work.

Don Quixote de la Mancha and Sancho Panza , Sherlock Holmes and Watson , The Three Musketeers , are varied examples of various types of endearing friendships exhibited in literature.

In the world of film and television, it can be found from classics such as El gordo y el flaco and The Three Stooges to the television series Friends , a comedy that revolves around the relationships of six friends.

International Friendship Day

The International Day of Friendship was designated, since 2011 , on July 30 by the General Assembly of the United Nations to pay tribute to this type of fundamental affection for humanity. However, the proposal to establish a day to celebrate friendship originates in Paraguay , in 1958 , and is raised by the World Friendship Crusade.

However, the date varies depending on the country where we are. In some places, such as Ecuador , El Salvador , Guatemala , Mexico , the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, it is celebrated on February 14 , together with Valentine’s Day . In Peru , it is celebrated on the first Saturday in July, while in Colombia it is the third Saturday in September, and in Chile the first Friday in October. Bolivia , for its part, celebrates it on July 23, and Argentina , Brazil andUruguay prefer to do it on July 20.

In this sense, one of the best known proposals to celebrate Friend’s Day is the one launched by an Argentine proposing to institute July 20, in commemoration of the arrival of man on the Moon in 1969 , due to the importance that this event constituted for the approach of all the people in the planet.
