Family Car TPL: what it is and how it works

The RC Auto Family is one of the latest innovations introduced in the Italian insurance market, through the amendment of Art. 134 of the Code of Private Insurance. The new family Malus Bonus has thus expanded the forms of protection already introduced by the Bersani decree on the inheritance of the merit classes, and could allow many motorists to save on the TPL policy. But in what way?

What is Family TPL

Let’s go in order and remember how Family Car TPL is an facilitation of civil liability for the family unit, which allows one of the members of one unit to “inherit” the best class of merit linked to another vehicle, provided that the property of this belongs to a member of the same family.

Although in this in-depth analysis we will expressly talk about Family Car TPL, we remind you that the Bonus Malus we are talking about today can be applied both in terms of car insurance and motorcycle insurance, and therefore allows you to pass the Bonus Malus from a car to a other but also from a car to a motorcycle or from a motorcycle to a car.

How active is Family TPL

The RC Auto Family is already active: the Bonus Malus family has been in force since last February 16th 2020. So, already today it is possible for some members of the family, to have access to a class of more affordable at about the time of ‘ purchase of a new car / motorcycle insurance contract or in the process of renewing the car / motorcycle insurance.

Who can (and who can not) use Family TPL

Family Auto TPL insurance can be requested by the car insurance holder, or by the insured, and is aimed at all members of the insured’s family unit.

In this foreshortening, take into consideration that the policy in question may also concern new drivers , provided that – obviously, the new driver is part of the insured’s family unit.

On the other hand, the following cannot benefit from the family car liability policy:

  • those who are not part of the insured’s family unit;
  • those who have caused road accidents and have a certificate of risk with one or more claims in the last 5 years.

How Family Car TPL works

To be even clearer on how Family TPL works , it is useful to proceed with an example.

Let’s imagine that there is an insured in the family with a first class vehicle (motorcycle or car), and you want to insure an additional vehicle. Well, based on the functioning of the Bonus Malus Fmiliare policy, this will be insured with the same class (in this case, the first), thus transferring the best merit class accrued.

Be careful though. In order to prove that you are part of the same family, a copy of the Family Status certificate must be presented to the insurance company, which can be requested from the Registry Office (most municipalities allow this document to be obtained online as well).

Differences with the Bersani decree

There are two main differences of the Family Car TPL policy compared to the Bersani decree :

  • it is now possible to transfer the merit class also to cars belonging to different categories. It is therefore possible to transfer the most advantageous merit class from a car to a motorcycle, or vice versa, from a car to a scooter (or vice versa), from a motorcycle to a van (or vice versa) and so on;
  • it is now possible to transfer the merit class not only when activating new insurance, but also when renewing car or motorcycle policies.

Finally, we remind you that through the possibilities established by the Bersani decree, it was possible to inherit the merit class only on the same type of vehicle.
