Engine cleaning: how to do it?

As all motorists know well, the mechanical parts and the engine are elements that get dirty very easily. Just think of the oil, smog, steam, grease and dirt that is collected from the asphalt and … the result is soon combined: the engine gets dirty very quickly and, in order to avoid efficiency problems in the use of the vehicle, a periodic cleaning of the engine is what is needed.

But how to clean the engine ? What are the accessories that should be used?

Engine cleaning with a degreasing product

Let’s start immediately by trying to share with you some useful tips for a better cleaning of the engine .

The first thing we recommend you do is to clean in a spacious, open-air place. The ideal would be to proceed with the operation in a car wash, which allows the washing of the engine to avoid damaging the surrounding areas. In addition, car washes have dedicated exhaust systems and, therefore, you can easily clean the engine so that the dirt goes to the right places.

Once you have placed the car in the best place to treat it, protect the electrical parts of the engine : it will be sufficient to cover them with special plastic or, if you do not have products specifically designed for these activities, proceed with the affixing of some shopping bags. Do not underestimate this step, as the electrical parts of the engine could actually be damaged by excessive use of water.

Speaking of protections, think about protecting the entry of engine air from the influx of water. Again, just use plastic.

Once this is done, you can move on to the operational stage of cleaning the car engine . Apply the car degreaser to the parts of the engine you intend to clean, rinse using water, a damp cloth or, if you are able, compressed air. Finally, let the engine dry until it has lost all moisture, remove the plastics and protectors you used and… you have just completed your first engine cleaning !

Engine cleaning with dry ice

Is it possible to clean the engine using dry ice ? The answer is yes, although it is often not necessary to go that far.

Remember that dry ice is nothing more than frozen carbon dioxide , transformed into small spheres to be thrown on the dirt at high pressure. Due to contact with the surface, the balls evaporate immediately and remove dirt particles. The result is a perfectly clean engine!

Be careful though. Dry ice is certainly not a cheap product, especially if you have to use it in large quantities such as you will probably need to clean the entire engine.

Professional engine cleaning

Finally, we remind you how, despite your ability, nothing and no one can probably replace professional engine cleaning .

Only a professional, equipped with the most modern technological devices, will be able to clean the engine in a more suitable way. Furthermore, hiring a professional in cleaning the engine will allow you to avoid any damage to the electrical system. The mechanic will also be able to clean the engine at the bottom, which you will probably not be able to wash if you are not sufficiently equipped (but it is hard to think that your garage or car wash can be equipped to allow you to lift the vehicle).

There is also another reason you should take your vehicle to a professional cleaning operator: liability.

Remember that the workshop is insured and therefore in case of damage any damage suffered to your vehicle will be repaid. If, on the other hand, it is you who damage the engine during cleaning, you will certainly not be able to help but complain to yourself!
