Origin

The right to have another nationality, in addition to Ecuadorian, began on August 24 , 1994 with a referendum decreed by then-President Sixto Durán-Ballén .

In this democratic expression, Ecuadorians voted in favor of changing the Constitution and giving dual nationality. The campaign in Ecuador was led by Lenin Medina and Elba Berruz .

It is so the 24 of January of 1995 the Congress enacted dual citizenship: “Ecuadorians by birth who acquire a second nationality, keep Ecuador,” the Official Gazette No. 618 of this date.

The October of August of 1998 the National Assembly drafts a new constitution and gives three constitutional rights to the Ecuadorian emigrant acquire another nationality and maintain the home, elect a president and vice-president in place of registration or registration, and defense part of the state while out of the country.

The document that approves it textually states that Ecuadorian nationality will be obtained by birth or by naturalization and will not be lost by marriage or its dissolution, or by the acquisition of another nationality .

Double nationality

Dual nationality refers to the condition of being a citizen of two nations at the same time. It is a legal status in which some citizens can be recognized as citizens simultaneously by several states.

Regarding dual nationality with other countries, Ecuador signed a Dual Nationality Agreement with Spain on March 4 , 1964 .

According to the Political Constitution of Ecuador of 2008 , Ecuadorians are so in two ways: by birth or by naturalization.

Naturalization

Ecuadorians by naturalization are those who:

  • Obtain the letter of naturalization .
  • Are adopted by an Ecuadorian person
  • Born to an Ecuadorian mother or father abroad.
  • Marry or maintain a de facto union with an Ecuadorian person, in accordance with the law.
  • That they obtain nationality for having provided services in the country.
