Double clutch transmission: what it is and how it works

Here is what you need to know about the dual-clutch transmission , the advantages and all the information you need to make an informed choice.

Double clutch transmission: what it is and how it works

The double-clutch gearbox is not a novelty of the new millennium, but dates back to the 1990s : the first to mount it was Honda, and then quickly spread to prestigious models of Ferrari and Porsche.

This gearbox is a type of automatic transmission equipped, in fact, with a double clutch, and based on the gear engaged it transmits a precise motion to the wheels: on the market there are various types, each with its own special characteristics, but each has two shafts.

How does it work? When a gear is engaged and the first shaft transmits the power of the engine, the gears of the next one are already positioned on the second: in this way the duration of the moment of shifting is reduced to a minimum.

In general, the system is based on two groups, each of which has its own clutch, one for even gears and the other for odd gears: everything is automated and is managed by an electronic control unit, with the option for managing manual.

Double clutch transmission: advantages

One of the main advantages of the dual-clutch gearbox is the maintenance of power when changing gear , which occurs quickly, avoiding waste of fuel and with maximum safety.

Furthermore, among the pros, the greater speed of shifting offers a fluid and snappy driving experience , while among the cons there is only the lack of the clutch pedal : in this case, if you are not used to it, be careful not to crush the the brake pedal in place!

Choosing the dual-clutch automatic transmission is especially useful for cars that are constantly on the move, and if so, we advise you to opt for the latest generation models.
