Steam is the official program that downloads and manages games published by Valve, a popular game studio that has produced titles like Half Life and Portal. While playing a game using Steam, important information may appear through the Steam Overlay. The Steam Overlay is a small box that appears to indicate which friends are online, if you have received a private message, or if you have unlocked a new game achievement. If you don’t want to see these messages, you can easily disable the Steam Overlay.
Step 1
Run Steam and press the “Settings” button. Click on the “In-Game Settings” tab.

Uncheck the box next to “Enable Steam Community In-Game” and click “OK”.

Deactivate Steam Overlay only on certain games by right-clicking on the game title, clicking “Properties” and unchecking “Enable Steam Community In-Game” on the “General” tab ”
