How to change the game mode in Minecraft

Whatever your reason, it is possible to change the game mode in Minecraft, and if you do not know how to do it, do not worry, as it is a fairly simple process.

In Minecraft, when you create a new world you select the game mode. You can choose between creative, survival and hardcore modes . Under normal circumstances this selection is permanent and a flag is set within the game file

However, Minecraft does lend itself to creativity and changing game styles, and you may find that the map you intended to play as a creative would work best if it were a survival world or vice versa. Or maybe you want to start in creative mode to build your base of operations and then switch to survival mode to conquer the world from the comfort of your castle.

Whatever your reason, it is possible to change the game mode in Minecraft, and if you do not know how to do it, do not worry, as it is a fairly simple process.

Changing game mode from survival mode

This is the “original” mode of the game. There, you have 10 hearts or lives, and you set your tools. Monsters also appear, you can suffer injuries, accidents, and even die. In this game mode you build your inventory of blocks and tools. It is similar to the peaceful mode, except that monsters do not appear in it.

Now, the way to change from this to the creative mode is as follows: go to the options of the world that you will build and in “Cheats” perform the activation. Create the world and press the “t” button, then type: / gamemode 1 to change to creative and / gamemode 0 to change to survival.

Changing game mode from creative mode

Here the creation mode is free, and you have a certain number of blocks and tools. In this mode you can fly, and unlike survival mode monsters do not appear suddenly. However, you may be damaged. To change game modes do the same procedure that I have already explained: once again select / gamemode 1 for creative and / gamemode 0 for survival.

Changing the game mode from hardcore mode

This mode is similar to survival, with the difference that if the player dies, his construction or world disappears and the difficulty level is set to “very difficult”. You can interact with the resources but you can no longer destroy the blocks, unless you use certain specific tools. Here you cannot activate “cheats” and you are warned that you have entered this mode by your own choice. The entrance is by the degree of difficulty. But, if you fail, you will have to re-register and start from the beginning. Now, as for changing the game mode from hardcore, it is not possible to do it.

Permanently change the game mode in Minecraft

To make permanent changes to the Minecraft game mode, you must edit the game file, which is called “level.dat”. In addition, you must use the same format that the program uses: Named Binary Label (NBT).

First: Install NBTExplorer

In order to permanently change the game mode in Minecraft, you must install NBTExplorer , which is a cross-platform tool available for Windows, Mac and Linux. You can read more about the tool in the official Minecraft.net thread or visit the Github page ; downloads are available for all three platforms on both links.

It is important that you back up the worlds before modifying them, so copy the entire file directory and keep them in a safe place.

When the application is run for the first time, it will automatically load the default directory where Minecraft files are saved for the operating system you are using.

Now make the necessary changes

Let’s say you are modifying a world of survival. First, take a look at the values you need to change to set it permanently in creative mode. Select the name of your world, let’s say “Try NBT” and expand it. Within the directory you will see multiple entries. The one with the world rules is the level.dat entry at the bottom of the list .

Expand the level.dat entry and click “Data.” Within that list of data you will find an entry called “GameType”. Although you can use keywords like “creative” or “c” to change modes when you use the / gamemode command in-game, the value of GameType must be set using a value number. These are the values you can use:

0 – Survival

1 – Creative

2 – Adventure

3 – Spectator

The goal here is to change the world you created in survival mode to creative, so you have to change the value from 0 to 1. Double click on the value and replace it with the value of the game mode you want. Then press CTRL + S or the save icon to save the changes.
