Can watermelon be considered a vegetable?

In the summer months it is one of the end of the meal -but also dessert or snacks- most loved by Italians: the beautiful watermelon , with its bright red color and its refreshing taste, tastes like summer and sea (have you ever tried to grill it? )

Watermelon, or watermelon, is very healthy : it contains a lot of water and few calories, quenches thirst and refreshes, is rich in vitamin B6, mineral salts and lycopene. We are used to eating it alone, but also in salads, as a skewer or in cockatils: but in reality is it a fruit or a vegetable ?

The question could leave you puzzled, since watermelon is commonly considered a fruit : yet technically, belonging to the family of cucurbits like cucumbers and pumpkins, it would be a vegetable. However, there are also those who say that watermelon is born from the ovary of the plant after flowering and contains the seeds, therefore it is to be classified as a fruit.

The dividing line between fruit and vegetables is actually much more blurred than we are used to thinking: to take a whim, however, try to taste the white part of the watermelon peel and you will discover that in the flavor it is in all respects similar to a cucumber!

Whether it’s a fruit or a vegetable, not bad: watermelon is very popular with young and old, its seeds also have remarkable properties and is also suitable for those who have to be careful with weight. (do not eat watermelon before going to the beach!) The only recommendation is not to exceed, especially at the end of the meal: watermelon is composed mostly of water , therefore it can swell and slow digestion by interfering with gastric juices. This is why there are those who claim to “not digest” the watermelon: in reality it is enough to eat it between meals, or in small quantities, to see the problem disappear!
