Brian Schmidt

Brian P. Schmidt . American scientist widely known for his research in cosmology. Nobel Prize in Physics , 2011 with the scientists Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess for providing evidence in favor of the acceleration in the expansion of the universe.

Biographical synthesis

He was born on 24 as February as 1967 in Missoula , Montana , USA

Scientific training

Graduated in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Arizona in 1989 . Doctor of Physical Sciences from Harvard University in 1993 . The doctoral thesis was carried out by Robert Kirshner and the study of class Ia supernova stars was used to measure the Hubble cosmological constant .

Investigations carried out

Schmidt was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center Astrophysical Smithsonian Harvard 1993 – 1994 prior to march to the Astronomical Observatory of Monte Stromlo in 1995 . Schmidt led the High-Z Supernova research team, where he measured the expansion of the universe to eight billion light-years in the past.

In 1998 this research team, along with the Supernova Cosmology Project, found evidence that the universe was accelerating in its expansion. Being named as “the most groundbreaking event of the year” according to Science magazine . Schmidt currently leads the celestial mapping project for the space telescope project and is part of the Southern Sky Survey Network. He currently serves as a prominent member of the Australian Scientific Research Council.

Awards and honours

  • 2000 – Malcolm McIntosh Award from the Australian government .
  • 2000 – Bok Prize from Harvard University .
  • 2001 – Joseph Lade Pawsey Medal from the Australian Academy of Sciences.
  • 2002 – Vainu Bappu Medal of the Astronomical Society of India .
  • 2005 – Reader at the Marc Aaronson Memorial
  • 2006 – Shaw Prize in Astronomy , shared with Adam Riess and Saul Perlmutter .
  • 2011 – Nobel Prize in Physics , shared with Adam Riess and Saul Perlmutter.

Schmidt and other High-Z team members (defined as co-authors of Riess in 1998 ) shared in 2007 the Gruber Prize in Cosmology, worth half a million dollars, and with Saul Perlmutter of the Lawerence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Supernova Cosmology Project (the team defined as co-authors of Perlmutter in 1999 ) for their discoveries in accelerating the expansion of the universe .
