Basketball Rules

Basketball is one of the most popular games among schoolchildren: like any team game, it unites children, makes them more friendly, and helps them learn to feel the team and themselves in it. Here we take a quick look at the rules of basketball for school children.

Explaining the rules of the game of basketball to schoolchildren, start with the simplest: two teams of five players play basketball on the field (the rest are in reserve – no more than 7 people from the team, and you can change at any time). The main goal of the game is to throw a basketball into the opposing team’s basket and prevent the other team from doing it.

Usually the entire match is in four parts of 10 minutes each, but since the physical education lesson is only 40 minutes, there is usually less time to play. But according to all the rules, the break between each part is 2 minutes, and after the second part – 15 minutes, and during this break the teams must exchange baskets.

Traditionally, the game begins with a jump ball, where the team captains hit the ball thrown by the referee towards their players and the opponent’s basket in order to take the start of the game into their own hands.

The technique of moving the ball across the field is important: it is imperative to run with the ball, hitting the floor with it, and specifically kicking or punching it is a violation.

But that’s not all: it is not the number of shots to the basket that counts, but the points that depend on which part of the basketball field the ball is thrown from. So for the ball thrown into the basket from the near and middle ground – 2 points, then the brown “3-point” line – 3 points (usually this is a distance of about 7 meters), penalty – one.

The gym must be marked for basketball

The rules of the game state that the winning team is the one with the most points at the end of the game time. If at the end of the game the teams have the same number of points, an additional 5 minutes is given – “overtime”, if the situation has not changed during these five minutes, the next additional time is spent and so on until the winner of the match is revealed.

In basketball, there are frequent violations for which the referee (physical education teacher) can fine the whole team and fouls of a particular participant.

In short, the most common rule violations among schoolchildren are:

  • Out – when the ball hits the boundary line of the basketball court;
  • “Running” and “carrying the ball” – one of the players who dribbles the ball takes 3 steps in a row without hitting the ball with his hand on the floor, or even runs with the ball in his hands;
  • “Violation of 3 seconds” – the player is more than three seconds under the opponent’s basket, while not in possession of the ball;
  • “Violation of 5 seconds” – the player with the ball does not pass the ball to another player or does not throw it into the opponent’s basket for more than five seconds;
  • “Violation of 8 seconds” – the team does not take the ball into the opponent’s zone for eight seconds;
  • “Violation of 24 seconds” – the team has possession of the ball, but does not throw it into the opponent’s ring zone within twenty-four seconds.
  • “Returning the ball” – when attacking, a team that is in the opponent’s zone, returns him back to its backcourt – this is a violation.

Of course, this is just an overview: not all the official rules of real basketball are listed here. But for students to be able to play this team game at school and become experts in it, this knowledge will be enough.
