The plot is not the most elaborate in the world, serving only as a mere pretext to embark on a journey that will take us to the heart of the Roman Empire itself. And because? The good news is that it has aged perfectly on the whole, which has its merit. Las Vegum (a clear nod to the North American city that you all have in mind) functions as the central hub for this production, a place that serves to host a good number of clearly different areas (or small worlds) set in other cities and locations such as Paris. , Venice or even a pirate island.
Characters have a number of unique abilities that they must exploit to overcome various situations and puzzles.
We can access one and the other as we progress, offering us a variety of situations to take into account in which, mainly, we are required to master the jumps, solve rather simple puzzles and, above all, wax the tens of Romans prowling the stage. The design of these worlds is not that it is too original or exciting (and less in these times), but despite that they guarantee fun and a certain variety.
His sense of humor, cameos, and control are the bestOne of the great assets presented by this Asterix and Obelix XXL 2 has to do with the possibility of being able to alternate the control of the two protagonists . Asterix and Obelix have certain unique skills that we must use to solve very specific situations and puzzles. And not only that, since at specific moments the collaboration of both is even necessary in order to move forward. The control is great and very intuitive, being a real pleasure both fighting and swimming, doing double jumps or throwing your opponents into the air.
The animations of the characters and the Romans are very good and even comical on many occasions.
Another of the great virtues that the video game possesses and that I personally have loved to rediscover is its sense of humor . Beyond the presence of very fine criticisms and certain sparkling dialogues (totally localized to our language, text and voices) that the protagonists maintain from time to time with various secondary characters, the best of all is to discover dozens of winks to video games and very famous sagas. Enemies inspired by Ryu or Mario from Super Mario Sunshine, bombs in the shape of Bomberman’s head, stone menhirs with an oval shape decorated as if they were Yoshi’s eggs … It is possible to notice a large number of these cameos and details, some of them they really priceless in my opinion.
Therefore, Asterix & Obelix XXL2 is quite an interesting and recommendable adventure, although it has a couple of defects that are related to its longevity. On the one hand, it is not exactly the most challenging title in the world, quite the contrary, and it may be that for more veteran users wandering around the stages is a real walk. And next to this, the size of the worlds is not too large, so beating the game can take about 6-8 hours at most, and it is not that it is very replayable.
The scenarios are relatively varied and allow us to enjoy Parisian settings, pirates, etc.
Regarding their graphic layout, titles such as the recent compilation trilogies based on Crash Bandicoot and Spyro have shown the graphic level that can be achieved in the remastering of this type of adventure. Unfortunately, in this case we are facing a much more humble work, that you must be clear about, but despite that it is more than decent. Good animations for the characters, very consistent fluidity, successful designs for the sets, great coloring … It is true that some elements are somewhat basic and details such as better lighting or the presence of higher quality textures are missing, but still with its flaws, it is a game that more than meets this facet.
The sound section is clearly superior, highlighting the excellent dubbing into our language and the various sound effects, leaving the soundtrack in the background, which does not disturb but does not contribute much either.
