Anemia

anemia is a pathological condition characterized by a decrease of hemoglobin (protein involved in the transport of oxygen) in the blood. The reduction of the protein causes a difficulty in the circulation of oxygen. This situation can occur after a reduction in the number, volume and concentration of circulating erythrocytes (the cells that carry hemoglobin), hemoglobin or its ability to join oxygen.

The symptoms that most often distinguish anemia are:

pallor

tachycardia

fatigue

dyspnea on exertion

irritability

insomnia

an increased predisposition to infections

What pathologies can be linked to anemia?

The diseases that can be linked to anemia are the following:

angiodysplasia

Colon cancer

Celiac disease

Liver cirrhosis

Kidney failure

Systemic lupus erythematosus

Malaria

Chagas pathology

Wilson pathology

Polycythemia vera

Intestinal polyps

Mallory-Weiss syndrome

Typhus

Toxoplasmosis

Kidney cancer

Colorectal cancer

Duodenal ulcer

Gastric ulcer

Remember that this is not a complete list and it is always better to consult with your doctor.

What are the solutions for anemia?

The treatment of anemia depends on the reason that it originated:

if there is a lack of folic acid just supplement the vitamin absent orally

if there is a lack of vitamin B12, the treatment includes intramuscular injections of the same vitamin

For iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia (the one in which the lack of hemoglobin depends on the low iron levels in the blood ) it is necessary to resort to the administration of ferrous salts, usually by the oral route, although in some people it may be better giving iron salts intramuscularly or intravenously (mainly occurs in situations of oral malabsorption)

Blood transfusions are used in the presence of very serious anemia or are reserved for anemics who cannot be subjected to other types of treatment.

In the presence of underweight or overweight patients, the reason for the anemia may be caused by an irregular diet. In this situation, the first therapeutic measure consists in correcting the wrong eating habits.

With anemia when to contact your doctor?

In case of anemia it is always good to contact your doctor, in particular if you are suffering from one of the diseases related to this disorder (see list of associated diseases).
