Ubisoft rescues the beloved ‘me against the neighborhood’ in a complete edition that maintains all its charisma and also its shortcomings.
The digital format is comfortable. Very comfortable. Being able to buy or try games without leaving home, access services like Game Pass or PlayStation Now, or even allow developers to release small games that would be impossible for a publisher to justify otherwise are things that we would not have with the physical format. But the digital format also has its drawbacks. A game can disappear from stores and be impossible to buy again, as is the case in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game , we assume, for licensing issues with Universal. After ten years, Ubisoft has managed to recover it, and today we can finally enjoy it again on practically all current platforms .
A “me against the neighborhood” of those who were no longer made
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition isa lifelong “me versus the neighborhood” where up to four players can cooperate to feed each other cookies through the streets of Canada, as we search for and defeat the seven evil ex-boyfriends of Ramona, something that will make more sense if you’ve read the comics. You don’t have to be familiar with the universe created by Bryan Lee O’Malley to enjoy the game, but obviously you win a lot if you are.
Nothing better to warm up than to distribute milk throughout Canada.
This complete edition not only recovers the game, but also adds multiplayer through the internet its additional contents released afterwards. These include two characters, Knives Chau and Wallace Wells, as well as different additional modes, which make up a total of four, including a traditional competitive fighting mode, a horde mode or a mode that faces all the bosses . We have to remember that Wallace’s downloadable content introduced multiplayer over the internet in the original, so it is not a novelty as such in this Complete Edition , and it would have been nice if Ubisoft had taken this proposal further and integrated it into additional modes; some of them, very funny.
No beat ’em up without your elevator.
So, as you can see, there are no actual news . Not a bad thing, as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition has aged great, and is still a hilarious game to play. It has a small role-playing touch that allows us to level up to unlock new movements and even buy –blind– improvements for our characters in the different stores that we find throughout the game.
Seven evil ex-boyfriends await us in this adventure.
At the playable level, yes, it has shocked us a little more ten years after its original launch. The reason, surely, is that in recent years we have seen authentic games within the beat ’em up genre , with Streets of Rage 4 at the helm, and Scott and company are not at the same height. It has some details that make us somewhat clumsy, such as when the enemies stay on the ground and we have to wait what seems like an eternity to be able to continue hitting them. Yes, there are certain movements that let us hit them on the ground, but they are moments that break that rhythm so necessary in the genre. There are also times when it becomes too chaotic and if we are playing at high levels of difficulty, cakes can arrive from everywhere without us being able to do anything to avoid it. It’s nothing too serious, but it does make Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition pales in front of new exponents of the genre.
Knives is one of the downloadable characters included in the full edition.
Where Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition has not aged absolutely nothing is in its audiovisual section. We think the art of the art pixel is questionable in many games, but not here. Both backgrounds and characters are meticulous, fantastically animated and packed with little details. It is a beautiful game from start to finish, which we never tire of watching .
The soundtrack, by Amanamaguchi, is a true genius that fits in perfectly with what happens on screen. 24 wonderful compositions that make the rest of the sound effects only have to comply to offer a round sound section. The game is still in Spanish, and although there is not much text, it can help to catch some references to other games or other elements of popular culture present throughout the adventure.
Between phases we will discover the story with illustrations as beautiful as this one.
The power of love
Interestingly, as in Scott Pilgrim’s comics , the power of love has become a very important weapon, and it has been the key to recovering a game that deserves to be available to everyone. We believe that it has its shortcomings, and that they are more noticeable today than ten years ago, precisely because we have seen a resurgence of the genre (which, who knows, perhaps is due to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game ) that has left the Very high bar, but that does not mean that it seems to us a highly recommended title, very funny, and that wastes affection and love .
It could have been a small celebration of such a beloved game, with a small gallery of illustrations or even more details on the canceled downloadables , or even a somewhat more careful edition that introduced multiplayer over the internet in the additional modes, but hey, in Bottom line we have to be glad that Ubisoft made the effort to recover Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game and that we can enjoy it today without complications.
