What you need to know about Monster Hunter World multiplayer/Monster Hunter World When Can I Play With Friends
Before we start, there are a few things you need to know about how Monster Hunter World’s multiplayer works:
- You cannot join a friend’s party if they are on a hunt that requires a hunter rank higher than yours. So if you are rank 2 and your friend is rank 8, you won’t be able to join. But your rank 8 friend can help you on a rank 2 mission.
- Assignments (story missions) are a bit finicky, and won’t let you join until after cutscenes have passed, which usually appear whenever you meet your target for the first time. From there, invite or ask for help.
- The difficulty will increase in multiplayer, but it does not increase with each additional player, so that two players (with their Felynes) will be the same as four players (who will enter without their Felynes).
- Don’t worry about the loot – you can all loot and get rewards, and you won’t lose anything compared to the single player mode.
How to join other friends or create multiplayer games/Monster Hunter World When Can I Play With Friends
Monster Hunter World’s multiplayer is a bit bumpy, but there are a few ways to get around its many menus.
How to play alone or with friends
1) When you select your saved game at the beginning, the options ‘Search online session’, ‘Create online session’ and ‘Search squad session’ appear.
That essentially allows you to find a session with other random players, a closed lobby (created by a friend or squad member), or start your own.
Whatever you choose, you will appear in Astera and you can start the activity you want – but don’t complicate yourself, select ‘Create an online session’, and then go below and select ‘Private Session’.
That will create a lobby where only you will be, so you can play alone and also invite your friends directly.
2) To invite a friend, press pause to bring up the menu in a social space like the meeting room or Astera, then go to the Communication tab and then Invite a friend. The corresponding PSN or Xbox Live section will appear, and you can start inviting.
3) Now you are in the same session. You will not be able to ‘see’ the other unless you are both in the meeting room (you can go there from Astera) or on the same mission.
To start a mission and have a friend join, go to the mission table and select the one you want. When you do, you will be given the option to enter the number of players and a code. The latter is only relevant if you are in an open lobby and don’t want random players to join you.
4) If you start the mission, you can prepare and start whenever you want. Your friends, for their part, will see a notification on the screen that will let them know that you have started. They then have to go to the Missions table and select Join a Mission and Available Missions.
How to join a squad in Monster Hunter World
Monster Hunter World’s brigades are the game’s equivalent to clans or guilds, and have all sorts of advantages if you regularly play with the same group of people.
What are brigades in Monster Hunter World?
- If you are part of a brigade, you can see and join friends online much easier. For example, when you start a game, ‘Find Squad Session’ will automatically link you to a squad member who is online.
- If there is no active squad session, you can create one and the others can join later. That means you won’t be playing with just anybody, and you don’t have to invite people to sessions like we’ve described above.
- Squad sessions are not exclusive to squad members, so you can invite others by invitation (pun intended) or share session IDs online. However, you can only join a brigade by invitation.
- You can leave messages for your squad, even if they are not online.
- You can be part of up to eight squads at the same time, allowing you to easily choose different groups of friends.
- Each brigade is limited to 50 members.
How to join a brigade
Joining a squad is a bit awkward as the squad leader has to personally invite you and you can’t search for one manually.
We’re not really sure if you have to be in the same session or not, but to make sure you join the same session as the leader and have them send an invite (if you are the leader, we explain how to manage the squad below).
When you have the invitation, the game will tell you what to do. Press Start, go to Communication and select Brigades at the bottom, then Join.
You can use the same Communication tab to view your Brigades information and exit later if you change your mind – otherwise, you are in and can join whenever you want.
How to create a brigade
What you want is to create your own brigade? Go to the meeting room first. It is a multiplayer lobby connected to Astera. Go there and use one of the elevators to the fourth floor, which is where it is, or from the World Map, select Astera and and from the menu you will appear directly there.
The Squad Counter is right in the center of the platform. Zoom in and the Create a squad option will appear.
As a squad leader, you are the only one who can invite or remove members, so if you start one you better be reasonably active so that you can deal with new requests from your friends.
You can manage your brigade, including the option to send invitations, pressing pause and then Communication and Brigades.
How to get the most out of Monster Hunter World’s multiplayer
Whether you’re dependent on matchmaking or joining other friends, here are a few tips based both on experience with previous games in the series and what’s new in World:
- It pays to have a clear goal, assign roles, create a plan, and balance teams appropriately. If you are going to face off against Diablos or Rathalos it is particularly important that everyone stick to the plans, as there is little room for heroes.
- Try to have enough time. Although a fight does not last long per se, unless you have some bad luck you are going to have to try many times before being successful.
- Do a couple of hunts to gather information before facing a monster – discover what weaknesses and strengths your enemy has, learn their routes, find places that allow you to take advantage of the environment, etc.
- Familiarize yourself with the distribution of the regions, and pay special attention to the path you must follow to get from the Camp to the place where the monsters are; You’ll pass out many times, and getting lost while trying to get back into battle is a bit embarrassing.
- Don’t worry about giving up a fight if you’re running out of time; It may seem silly to walk away after 15 minutes and start over, but it’s less of a loss than going on for another five minutes even knowing you’re going to fail.
- On the other hand, don’t give up. These matches are made to be tough, rewarding players who know how to be patient and keep trying.
